Branklyn Garden NTS This haven of tranquility in the city of Perth is filled with rare and unusual plants from around the world, including the vivid Himalayan Blue Poppy.

Branklyn Garden is an oasis of peace and colour within walking distance of Perth. Two acres of garden contain rare and unusual plants. Among the most breathtaking are the Himalayan blue poppies, Meconopsis, which flower in May and June. Throughout spring and summer, the rock garden is in full bloom, containing a wide collection of alpines plants and Primulas. In autumn the many Japanese Maples pu

t on a spectacular fiery red display. The garden is predominantly a collection of plants from China, Tibet, Bhutan and the Himalayas. There is an impressive amount of the original plants collected by the famous plant collectors Ludlow and Sherriff. Take a little piece of our garden haven home with you from our plant sales and gift shop and enjoy light refreshments in our tearoom.

As part of the NTS annual conference for garden leads we were in Edinburgh last week to hear from colleagues in the industry about managing change in heritage gardens. We were privileged to get a a quick sneak peak inside the restored palm house Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh . What a project, with such attention to detail. No spoilers for the beautiful planting inside, but suffice to say there are some wonderful specimen ferns to goggle at.

What's looking good in the garden this week chosen by Kate. As the autumn tints start to appear it is great to celebrate some of the developing fruits and berries, along with the flowering stars of the early summer.
1. Kirengeshoma palmata - Japanese wax flower an elegant and statuesque herbaceous perennial (Photo Eilidh Fletcher)
2. Cercidiphyllum japonicum - another Japanese plant commonly known as the Katsura tree. Although the leaves haven't particularly started to colour the sweet scent it releases in autumn can definitely be caught on still days.
3. Tricyrtis formosana - an unusual and striking herbaceous perennial from East Asia - a star for a partly shaded area (Photo Eilidh Fletcher)
4. Sorbus frutescens a very small white berried Rowan with fruits developing well (Photo Mike Kiely)
5. Magnolia wilsonii seed pods - look up into the canopy to catch sight of these very strange looking seed pods, and beware on a windy day as you do notice if one hits you on the head! (Photo Mike Kiely)

The garden is open daily from 10am to 5pm, the tearoom from 11am to 4pm. Please use our car park on Fairmount Terrace (PH2 7AS) and take the 200m walk down to the garden gate. There is limited blue badge parking at the gate (PH2 7BB). Dogs on short leads are welcome.

The detail of these startling blue Gentiana septemfida flowers really draws you in. Although potentially quite a lax (almost sprawling) plant, the brilliant blue flowers are loved by pollinators and these gentians get going before the bulb of the other autumn flowering gentians.

Our what's looking good in the garden this week are the choices of one of our volunteers, Henry, who has been welcoming visitors and helping in the tearoom every Friday for the last 4 months before he heads to university. This is the first time we've had a non-gardening person make up the list and is definitely something we need to repeat as it gives a lovely different perspective .
1. Hydrangea paniculata 'Polar Bear' - a stunning plant on the edge of the rock garden in full flower just now
2. Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' - one of the original plantings from the Renton's era there are a number of these 100 year old specimens at Branklyn.
3. Hosta sp (unfortunately unnamed) - I had no idea that the lilac flowers were subtly scented until I read Henry's description!
4. Platycodon grandiflorus 'Albus' - Balloon Flower from Japan - a late season perennial that comes in blue, pink and white forms.
5. Cyclamen hederifolium - these autumn flowering corms are just starting into flower now, these are also scented but you really need to be nimble to get down to smell these beauties.
