Yaxley Community Fridge

Have you seen posts about Yaxley Community Fridge and wanted to know more? Here's a handy guide:-

What is a Community Fridge?
A Community Fridge is a way of redistributing food that would otherwise go into landfill. Food that can no longer be sold by shops and businesses are collected by volunteers and handed out by Community Fridge.

Who can use a Community Fridge?
Anyone can! Community Fridges are different to Foodbanks, which are referral only. The purpose of a Community Fridges is to reduce food waste which is something we can all help with.

Why are there set opening hours?
The Yaxley Community Fridge is run by volunteers who give a lot of time up to collect the food, sort and store it as well as hand it out. They fridge can only run when they are available so it operates with set opening hours. The fridge is open Monday 3-3:30pm , Wednesday and Friday 10:30-11am.

Why do you give out bags?
The volunteers have tried different methods of handing out food and this is the easiest way to manage.
The collected food is shared out evenly between the bags which are handed out to those who attend. If people would like a second bag then people can rejoin the back of the queue and if there are any left over they can have a second bag.

Do you always give out the same things?
No, what we receive is dependent on what the shops and businesses give us. Sometimes there will be a wide variety and sometimes a small amount.

What do you do if there is something in the bag you won't use?
Just hand this back to one of our volunteers and this can be passed on to someone else. Remember the aim is to reduce food waste, not to pass on the waste.

Can the food be delivered?
No, unfortunately not. As the fridge is operated by volunteers deliveries cannot be made.

Why not follow us for more news and updates.
