Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is looking for people across our communities to join as On-Call Firefighters.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference, protect your local community, learn new skills and become part of an incredible team.

The first step is to attend an On-Call Awareness Session at your local fire station, where you'll:
✅ Learn more about the role
✅ Meet current On-Call firefighters
✅ Find out about the recruitment process
✅ Have the chance to try the National Firefighter Selection Tests in a supportive environment

The sessions last around 2 hours, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and see what's involved.

Before applying, you'll need to check that your postcode falls within a recruiting area and register your interest. Successful applicants will also complete pre-employment checks, including a DBS check and social media screening.

During this unprecedented period of wildfires, resources across the fire and rescue services UK wide have been stretched to the limit. Our control room staff, our fellow fire crews, the farming community, contractors and volunteers are all doing an amazing job in some challenging conditions and pulling together when times are tough.

This current period is significantly tiring for all staff working hard to try and deal with the unprecedented amount of fires but a special thank you must go to all the families of our firefighters here at Peterchurch. All of the crew here is on-call and that means so much time is being spent away from loved ones. Day and night, with very long hours means we’re not at home and families are left to pick up the pieces. We also have to thank our primary employers, they have shown huge support by allowing us to protect the community.

You will have seen the photos on TV and the videos on socials, smelt it in the air and seen us driving around heading to another incident. The messages of thanks, biscuits, cups of tea, cold drinks, ice creams and support has been amazing.

⚠️ We respectfully ask that you carefully reconsider all activities that may cause fire. The smallest spark can turn into a large and uncontrollable fire in a matter of seconds. 👉 Please read our advice below:

❌ Don't have BBQs.
❌ Don't light bonfires.
❌ Don't drop ci******es, matches or smoking materials on the ground.
❌ Don't leave glass bottles or litter in open spaces.
❌ Don't leave mirrors or reflective objects where they could focus sunlight.
❌ Don't use fireworks.
❌ Don't park vehicles on dry grass. Hot exhausts and catalytic converters can start fires.
❌ Don't burn garden waste.
❌ Don't use machinery that creates sparks near dry grass, crops or vegetation.
❌ Don't continue working if equipment is overheating.
❌ Don't ignore damaged exhausts, bearings or brakes that could generate heat or sparks.
❌ Don't let cut grass, straw or debris build up around engines and moving parts.
❌ Don't refuel machinery while it's hot or running.
❌ Don't leave machinery unattended while operating.

13/08/26 11:32 crews called to smoke issuing from an unknown location in Preston on Wye. A small fire in a skip which was unattended was found and extinguished using a hose reel jet before filling the tank back up and then back to station

15:38 rescue appliance mobilised to reports of smoke in the area near to Bredwardine Hill, investigations were undertaken and no signs of fire found with smoke believed to be from large incident over the border in Wales

16:16 rescue appliance mobilised to reports of smoke in the area near to Longtown, investigations were undertaken and no signs of fire found with smoke believed to be from large incident over the border in Wales

Crews enjoyed a well earned ice cream on the way back 🍦

20:36 Peterchurch crews were then called for standby duties at Malvern before then being directed to standby duties at Bromsgrove to ensure suitable fire cover was provided across the service. While travelling up north the appliance was mobilised to take over reliefs at a large incident in Pershore where a large area of gardens and buildings involved in fire were still holding heat and smouldering. A hose reel was used to dampen down any hot spots along with our thermal imaging camera. Crews got back around 5 in the morning ready for further calls
