On Monday evening, 25th May, Peterhead Lifeboat was carrying out its bi-monthly exercise when the crew were tasked by UK Coastguard to assist in a search of Peterhead Harbour and the surrounding area following the activation of a Man Overboard (MOB) Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).
Using the lifeboat’s onboard equipment, the crew were able to trace the signal to a vessel within Peterhead Harbour. After liaising with the vessel’s skipper, it was confirmed that the PLB had been activated accidentally.
Following a report back to HM Coastguard in Aberdeen, all teams were satisfied that there was no ongoing danger to any persons. Peterhead Lifeboat was subsequently stood down and resumed its planned training exercise

Coxswain Pat Davidson commented: “Although a false alarm, it was reassuring to know all equipment worked correctly and no one was in danger. PLBs and EPIRBs are the final line of defence when someone is in danger and can speed up search and rescue response and rescue times.”
