Yesterday at 1455hrs, Peterhead Lifeboat was tasked by UK Coastguard following the activation of a Man Overboard (MOB) distress beacon.

The crew mustered and launched shortly afterwards, making their way to the beacon’s reported position. Once on scene, the lifeboat was tasked with carrying out an expanding square search from the activation position. With nothing located during the search, the crew were then requested to conduct a shoreline search.

Due to the location and the rocky nature of the shoreline, the decision was made to launch the Y-boat, allowing crew members to search closer to and amongst the rocks.

After approximately two hours of searching, working alongside shore-based Coastguard Rescue Teams from Peterhead and Cruden Bay, the distress beacon was located ashore within the initial search area.

With the device recovered and satisfied that nobody was in distress, Peterhead Lifeboat was stood down and returned to station, where the crew made the lifeboat ready for service at 1740hrs.

A great example of the lifeboat and Coastguard teams working together to thoroughly investigate an alert and ensure there was no one in danger.

Whilst conducting our routine Monday night exercise last night, the crew were carrying out a towing exercise in Peterhead Harbour when, at 1920hrs, Peterhead Lifeboat was tasked by UK Coastguard following a report from a member of the public that a fisherman was waist-deep in the water near the River Ugie.

After a short time, the fisherman was no longer visible, although their fishing gear could still be seen in the water.

Peterhead Lifeboat quickly departed the harbour and made best speed to the River Ugie to commence a search. We were joined by UK Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 851 from Inverness, along with shore-based Coastguard Rescue Teams.

The next planned part of the evening’s exercise was a Search and Rescue scenario for Navigator Craig Aird. With the real incident closely matching the planned scenario, the crew were able to incorporate the shout into the exercise, allowing Craig and the rest of the crew to put their training into practice in a real operational situation.

After approximately 50 minutes of searching, the fisherman was located ashore, safe and well.

Once satisfied that nobody was in danger, Peterhead Lifeboat was stood down from service at 2013hrs and returned to continue our planned exercise.

Peterhead Lifeboat was tasked by UK Coastguard at 1533hrs on Monday 17th August following a report from a member of the public that two children were in difficulty aboard a small dinghy approximately 100 metres off Peterhead Golf Course.

As the lifeboat was preparing to launch, the tasking was cancelled after the children had safely made it ashore.

A good outcome, and the member of the public did exactly the right thing by raising the alarm.

If you see someone on the coast or in the water who you believe is in difficulty, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard 🚨

Last Thursday, our crew had the pleasure of exercising with Rescue Helicopter Viper 1.

The exercise provided a great opportunity for our crew to practise working alongside the helicopter team, conducting personnel transfers using the hi-line.

Exercises like this are invaluable for keeping our skills sharp and ensuring both crews are prepared to work together safely and effectively when it really matters.

A big thank you to the crew of Viper 1 for their time and professionalism.

RNLI Peterhead are recruiting ALB Crew!

Our crew are at the heart of every lifeboat launch, working together in challenging conditions to help save lives at sea. You’ll receive full training, develop new skills and become part of a close-knit team dedicated to helping those in need.

Daytime availability and weekend availability are essential for this role, as we need crew who can commit to training, exercises and responding to shouts throughout the year.

If you’re reliable, work well as part of a team and are looking for a rewarding new challenge, we’d love to hear from you.

📅 Applications close 13 September 2026

The RNLI’s Lifeboat Station in Peterhead is looking for volunteers to join the existing team in the role of All Weather Lifeboat Crew.

14/08/2026

RNLI Peterhead are looking for additional Launch Authorities to join our volunteer team.

The Launch Authority plays an important role in the safe and effective running of the station, particularly when the lifeboat is required to launch. It’s a great opportunity to take on additional responsibility, support our volunteer crew and help ensure the station is ready to respond when someone needs us.

If you’re looking for a new challenge, enjoy working as part of a team and want to make a real difference in your local community, this could be the role for you.

💙 A LONG OVERDUE THANK YOU 💙

Now that we have finally had a chance to catch our breath after an incredibly busy few months for our station, we have some very important thank-yous to share.

Our Station Open Day raised an outstanding £6,525.91 for the RNLI, and we could not have done it without the incredible support of our community.

🧡 Our event partners: Intermara Marine, who provided Reul Na Mara for our harbour trips, The Dolphin Café and Peterhead Port Authority.

💙 Those who joined us on the day: our flank station in Aberdeen with their lifeboat, Peterhead Sea Cadets, HM Coastguard, Peterhead Fire Station, the Scottish Ambulance Service and The Douglas Currie Vintage Lifeboat.

🧡 Our brilliant performers: Red Brick Theatre Group, Slessor School of Dance and Fraserburgh R.B.L. Pipe Band.

💙 Our generous seafood donors: P&J Johnstone, Amity Fish Company, The Old Smokehouse, Seafood Ecosse and The Ugie Smokehouse.

🧡 Our wonderful local supporters: Arc Cinema, Niki Max Café, Duncan Cycles, Seaview Hotel, Keith Milne Blinds, Oksana, Berryhill Driving Range, Strachan’s Ltd, Asda Peterhead, Morrisons Peterhead, Avon by Mary Shaw, Murdoch Allan, Peterhead Ice Factory, George Donald’s, Symposium Coffee House.

Thank you also to our wonderful stallholders, everyone who gave their time, resources or support, and every person who came along on the day.

Finally, to our incredible fundraisers and lifeboat crew: what a team. 💙

This thank you may be late, but it could not be more heartfelt.

Ok… we think we’ve finally recovered! 😅

…Well, recovered from organising it anyway! 😂 We can’t imagine how everyone who actually took part is feeling after tackling the Bay Swim or throwing themselves into the Raft Race! 💙

What an incredible evening it was. A huge thank you to every single person who entered, supported, volunteered or came along to cheer everyone on. You helped make the return of these events to Scottish Week a fantastic success.

🏊 Bay Swim Results
🥇 Fastest Male – Aedan Strachan
🥇 Fastest Female – Libby Reid

Aedan was first to reach the shore with an impressive time of 8m 04s, with Libby crossing shortly behind him to finish second overall with the remarkable time of 8m 18s – an incredible achievement by both swimmers. 👏

Every single swimmer should be proud of themselves – the determination shown from start to finish was brilliant to watch.

🚣 Raft Race Results
🥇 1st Place – Team McGill
🎭 Best Raft/Fancy Dress – The Roundtable Santas 🎅

And we have to give a special mention to Peterhead Rugby Club, whose raft decided it preferred life upside down! 😂 They took the capsize in great spirits and have already promised they’ll be back next year to settle the score. We can’t wait!

Many people don’t realise that although these events formed part of Scottish Week, they were organised and brought back entirely by Peterhead RNLI as fundraising events to support our lifesaving work. Seeing so many of you getting involved made all the hard work worthwhile.

If you took part and haven’t had a chance to collect or share your sponsorship yet, there’s still time. Or perhaps you just want to support the event! Every pound raised helps our volunteer crew continue saving lives at sea, so we’d be incredibly grateful for any support. 💙

We’re already talking about next year… so consider this your official warning! 👀 Start planning those rafts, recruit your teammates, and who knows… maybe we’ll see even more of you taking the plunge in the Bay Swim too!

Thank you again, Peterhead. You were amazing. 💙🚤
