On Monday evening, 25th May, Peterhead Lifeboat was carrying out its bi-monthly exercise when the crew were tasked by UK Coastguard to assist in a search of Peterhead Harbour and the surrounding area following the activation of a Man Overboard (MOB) Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).

Using the lifeboat’s onboard equipment, the crew were able to trace the signal to a vessel within Peterhead Harbour. After liaising with the vessel’s skipper, it was confirmed that the PLB had been activated accidentally.

Following a report back to HM Coastguard in Aberdeen, all teams were satisfied that there was no ongoing danger to any persons. Peterhead Lifeboat was subsequently stood down and resumed its planned training exercise

Coxswain Pat Davidson commented: “Although a false alarm, it was reassuring to know all equipment worked correctly and no one was in danger. PLBs and EPIRBs are the final line of defence when someone is in danger and can speed up search and rescue response and rescue times.”

From all of us at RNLI Peterhead, this tragic news is deeply difficult to comprehend.

The loss of volunteer rescuers while answering a call for help resonates across the entire search and rescue community. Like crews everywhere, they responded without hesitation, driven by a simple and selfless commitment to help others in need.

Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the realities faced when launching to sea. No matter the level of experience or preparation, conditions can change in an instant, bringing risks that are never taken lightly.

Today, our thoughts are with the families, friends, and fellow crew members of those who lost their lives, and with the entire Marine Rescue NSW community.

We send our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time 💙

At 0944hrs this morning, Peterhead lifeboat was tasked by UK Coastguard to assist a pleasure craft approximately 70 nautical miles northeast of Peterhead. The vessel had departed Fraserburgh the previous morning and was en route across the North Sea when it began taking on water.

The crew issued a mayday over VHF radio, prompting a coordinated response from UK Coastguard. Lifeboats from Fraserburgh, Peterhead, and Aberdeen were deployed, along with Rescue Helicopter 851 from Inverness and Coastguard fixed-wing aircraft 224 from Humber.

At 1027hrs, the crew informed the Coastguard that they were abandoning ship and transferring to a liferaft.

Both aircraft arrived on scene at approximately 1100hrs, where Rescue 851 successfully recovered all four crew members from the liferaft. Following the rescue, all other responding units were stood down with thanks and returned to their respective stations.

Peterhead lifeboat arrived back on station at 1330hrs and was made ready for service.

This incident highlights the vital importance of coordinated search and rescue operations, demonstrating how multiple agencies working together can achieve a successful outcome even in challenging offshore conditions.

RNLI Peterhead volunteers were invited to Balmoor Stadium yesterday evening for a photo opportunity with the Peterhead Boys Club Reds 2014.

The team had just received their new training tops and kit bags which proudly displays the RNLI Ensign in recognition of their support for the RNLI, these have been donated to the team by a generous benefactor.

The squad now heads to Ayr this weekend to compete and we wish them all the very best of luck!

Today we celebrate an incredible milestone, 20 years of service for RNLB The Misses Robertson of Kintail at Peterhead Lifeboat Station.

Since entering service, she has answered the call 329 times, aiding 255 people and saving 27 lives. Behind every launch is a story of courage, commitment, and the unwavering dedication of her volunteer crew. These are not just numbers, they represent real lives changed, families reunited, and tragedies prevented.

To mark this special anniversary, the crew have commemorated the occasion with a unique bottling of whisky by Murray McDavid. Distilled at Royal Brackla and matured for 15 years in sherry casks, this special release is a fitting tribute — crafted with care, character, and depth, much like the lifeboat and those who serve aboard her.

Here’s to two decades of lifesaving service, and to many more years ahead. Thank you to every crew member, past and present, who has been part of her story.

Yesterday saw the arrival of the new Fraserburgh Lifeboat into Peterhead. Lifeboat 16-21, John Buchanan Barr is due to replace Fraserburgh’s current lifeboat, Willie and May Gall which has proudly served Fraserburgh and the surrounding areas for 23 years.

Today both Lifeboat 16-21 and Peterhead Lifeboat will depart Peterhead at approximately 1500hrs and make way for Fraserburgh where we will rendezvous with Fraserburgh Lifeboat and other vessels participating in the flotilla.

After a short display, lifeboat 16-21 will arrive through the breakwaters at 1621hrs before berthing at the lifeboat station.

This is a special day for Fraserburgh and we couldn’t be more honoured to attend. We are very excited for our flank station and wish them all the best with their new lifeboat 🛥️

The lighter nights are finally making a comeback in Peterhead and morale has improved dramatically. ☀️

It’s amazing what a bit of daylight after 5pm can do.. suddenly it’s not just work, home, darkness, repeat.

We’re not saying spring is here yet… but it’s at least thinking about it.
