Uppark House and Garden (National Trust)

Uppark House and Garden (National Trust) A tranquil 17th century house set within intimate gardens with beautiful views. The elegant Georgian interior houses a famous Grand Tour collection. G.
(275)

Free to enter gardens, cafe & second-hand shop open Sunday-Wednesday 10am-4pm
The house is open on Sunday and Monday with bookable volunteer led tours available on Tuesday. Uniquely placed in a stunning hilltop location on the South Downs, Uppark was built in the 17th century and restored to its former glory after a fire in 1989. Discover the world of Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh, Lady Emma Hamilton

and the dairymaid who married her master. The complete servants' quarters in the basement are shown as they were in Victorian days, when H. Wells' mother was housekeeper. The garden is adorned with wonderfully scented shrubs and fine specimen trees, all planted within a naturalistic framework with breathtaking sea views. Due to extreme weather and position on top of the Downs Uppark sometimes has to close to visitors at very short notice. House Rules:

Did you know that the UK is home to more than 50 species of wild orchids, all of which are protected 🌸

These remarkable plants have one of nature's most fascinating life cycles, with tiny seeds that can only germinate under very specific conditions, including forming relationships with fungi in the soil. As a result, it can take 5–10 years before an orchid flowers.

Orchids can be found across the UK countryside at this time of year and are often an indicator of healthy, species-rich soils. Here at Uppark, they're currently adding a touch of magic to our wildflower meadow.

If you'd like to come and enjoy our orchids, please help us protect them by keeping to the paths while exploring the meadow. These delicate plants thrive when left undisturbed.

Our gardener George talks through a significant part of Uppark's landscape 🌿

The meadow is coming alive with yellow rattle - a small but important wildflower helping the grassland thrive. As it spreads, it creates space for even more wildflowers to grow, shaping the meadow’s future season by season.

A quiet sign of nature doing exactly what it should 🌼
