🚨New Fire Safety Regulations Coming – Residential Evacuation Plans (RPEEPs)

From 6 April 2026, new legislation will require Responsible Persons in certain residential buildings to take additional steps to support residents who may need assistance to evacuate in the event of a fire.

This includes identifying residents who may struggle to self-evacuate due to mobility, sensory, or cognitive impairments and developing a person-centred evacuation plan.

Who does this apply to?

• The new requirements apply to buildings that are 18 metres or more in height, or seven or more storeys.
• Buildings that are more than 11 metres in height and operate a simultaneous evacuation strategy

Who is responsible?

The law places duties on Responsible Persons, such as:
• Building owners
• Managing agents
• Housing providers
• Landlords responsible for common areas

Access for firefighters: Information about residents who may require assistance and the agreed evacuation arrangements must be recorded and stored in the building’s Secure Information Box (SIB) so firefighters can access it quickly during an emergency.

Residents: If you live in a high-rise residential building and believe you may need assistance to evacuate during a fire, you should speak to your building owner or manager. If you are unsure, take a look at our website for more information. https://www.northyorksfire.gov.uk/business-safety/residential-personal-emergency-evacuation-plans-rpeeps/

đźš’These changes aim to ensure everyone can evacuate safely and that firefighters have the information they need to help those most at risk.

Do you or a loved one use emollients?

You may not realise that emollients make fabrics more flammable. If you smoke or use an open flame, the risk of fire is higher.

It’s important to continue using these products to treat skin conditions but take action to reduce the fire risk.

To reduce the risk:
-Avoid smoking or open flames when wearing fabric with emollients dried on them.
-Never smoke in bed.
-Wash clothing and bedding frequently.

Exposing your v**e to extreme temperatures is a fire risk.

❌ Avoid leaving it in a hot car or out in the freezing cold.

❌ Never use damaged, swollen or hot batteries.

Unplug your v**e when it’s fully charged to reduce the risk of fire.

Rechargeable v**es contain batteries which can overheat when left charging for too long - and that means fire risk.

It will take you 30 seconds to drop a used v**e at a recycling point.

When v**es get crushed in general waste or mixed recycling, the batteries can spark. That spark becomes a fire. Sometimes in the truck. Sometimes at the depot.

Follow the link in the comments to find your nearest v**e recycling point.

It could be at a supermarket, v**e shop or council site.
