Tower of the week! 🎉

Here sits Mill Tower! As per its namesake there’s a numerous different reasons it was named how it was, one being a horse mill, this was situated in the same corner of the outer ward of the castle! Another could be due to a mill being recorded nearby to the Pickering beck!

It now proudly boasts our flag, and you are able to visit the inside of it!

Which explatuantion of the name sounds more accurate to you ?

One of the most predominant sights of Pickering Castle is Rosamund’s tower !

Situated on the northernmost part of the site it now sits covered by the beautiful ivy, originally included in King Edward II’s instructions of having a postern next to the King’s Tower!

Till this day it is still not known why it was named Rosamund’s, speculation says it was the name of King Henry II’s mistress ‘Fair Rosamund’.

How do you think the tower got its name? 🏰

Pickering Castle was the centre of a large estate, known as the Honour of Pickering. It served as a local power base concerned with administration, defence and law enforcement. A pair of manacles (12th-16th century) found on site is displayed in the Chapel. The hinges allowed them to fit around wrists or ankles, and were connected by a heavy-duty chain secured with a padlock. There was a prison in the ground-floor of Coleman Tower which held petty criminals, thieves and offenders against the Honour of Pickering.

Over the winter when the site was closed, we took the opportunity to make some repairs to the Castle. A large area of the wall next to Coleman's Tower was 'de-vegged'.

It's important to control plant growth on historic structures like Pickering Castle in order to prevent damage from plants with woody roots, to clear areas for inspection, or for repair work.
