Supporting Our Maternity and Neonatal Service Colleagues
We are proud of our maternity and neonatal services and the compassionate, high-quality care our teams provide to women, birthing people, babies and families every day. We are equally committed to listening, learning and improving whenever concerns are raised, and to being open and transparent when we do not get things right.

We are aware of historic allegations that are currently being recirculated on social media. These allegations were fully investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which concluded that there was no case to answer in relation to the individuals whose roles have been recently referenced online. We want to be clear that we fully support our maternity and neonatal colleagues. Continued online targeting of these dedicated professionals is both unfair and unwarranted.

Our staff are highly committed individuals who work tirelessly to provide safe, compassionate and effective care at some of the most significant moments in people's lives. While scrutiny of services is important, personal attacks on staff are deeply concerning.

Most importantly, we remain focused on the women, birthing people, babies and families who use our services today. Whether you have recently discovered you are pregnant, are currently receiving care, or have previously used our services, your experience matters to us.

We are proud of the progress our maternity and neonatal services continue to make and we remain committed to working closely with women, birthing people, families and our local communities to further improve the care we provide.

Last week we celebrated our new Emergency Care Building reaching the highest point in its construction. Due for completion in April 2029, the Emergency Care Building will provide four clinical floors of modern, purpose-built facilities designed to support the delivery of urgent and emergency care services for patients across Plymouth, South Devon and Cornwall. Messages to those who cared Monday - Sharing your messages to those who cared:

To Maternity service OPD and inpatient, Thank you so much to every single person I met along the way prior to my babys arrival via c sec on 20/10/25.

Pre birth all my care was seamless with multiple extra scans and tests. All appointments were timely and results given rapidly. I had to chase nothing as it was all so organised. Excellent use of technology with the online notes access. Great communication between community midwives and Derriford maternity teams.

I stayed on the maternity ward for a week prior due up transverse lie and EVERY SINGLE PERSON I met on that ward were wonderful (house keepers/HCA/midwives). You were all so busy but you never appeared to show that to your patients (even those that tested your patience!). How you made it appear like you had so much time for everyone when you were rushing around so much is an art form! And thanks for the side room upgrade ;) and carrying all my stuff down to TCW when Theo was in NICU!

Thank you to NICU for the excellent care and reassurance but specifically taking time to seek confirmation on aspects like formula for tube feeds/dummy use/using my colostrum/skin to skin asap. These little touches were really appreciated and showed you had the mums/parents wishes a priority not just the babies care.

TCW and the nursing staff that spent so long teaching us to breast feed were amazing and have meant we were able to breast feed successfully as you gave me so much confidence. Was lovely to see some of the midwives from pre birth looking after me post birth.

Community midwives were as good post birth as they pre birth as they were rapid with their support for feeding and treating a tongue tie meant we were able to prevent any feeding issues and enabled theo to put weight on.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) has marked a significant milestone in the construction of its new Emergency Care Building (ECB) today, with partners, staff and contractors coming together to celebrate the building reaching its highest point.

The traditional "topping out" ceremony took place at Derriford Hospital, recognising the progress made on one of the Trust's most important infrastructure projects. The milestone signifies the completion of the building's main structural framework and marks the transition to the next phase of construction.

Representatives from UHP, construction partner Willmott Dixon Construction, design teams, supply chain partners and staff gathered to celebrate the achievement and recognise the efforts of everyone involved in bringing the project to life.

Due for completion in April 2029, the Emergency Care Building will provide 4 clinical floors of modern, purpose-built facilities designed to support the delivery of urgent and emergency care services for patients across Plymouth, South Devon and Cornwall.

The development forms a key part of the Trust's ambition to improve patient experience, enhance clinical environments and support future healthcare needs for the growing population it serves.

From today, 1 September 2026, pregnant women are eligible for their free winter flu vaccination.

It’s also a good time to get respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccinations, if they haven’t had them already.

Speak to your GP or midwife about getting your vaccine.

You can also go to clinics in the community for your vaccine, the next available clinics are:
- Thursday 3 September - 10am to 12pm at Saltash Family Club
- Monday 7 September - 10.15am to 12.15pm at The Barn Family Hub
- Wednesday 9 September - 9am to 12pm at Derriford Hospital Antenatal department
