🗳️ Local elections will be going ahead in Plymouth in May 2026.

The Government recently invited councils to consider postponing elections in areas affected by Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). While this may be right for some, Plymouth is already well advanced in preparations and does not face capacity challenges.

Councillor Jemima Laing, Acting Leader of Plymouth City Council has today announced that next year’s elections will proceed as planned. 👇

🚧 Woolwell to The George reminder

The outbound side of Tavistock Road (opposite Woolwell Crescent) will be reduced to one lane from around 8pm tonight.

This is for work to construct the new crossing and drainage, as well work on the central reservation.

The lane closure will be in place until summer.

So... we know that our changes on Tavistock Road overnight have eased some of the congestion. But we know it still isn’t good enough.

Our engineers have been back out and today have made further changes, shortening the southbound lane closure after Plessey Roundabout. As a result, the merge now starts after Bickleigh Down Road.

Again, we are sorry about the congestion; we know it has been really inconvenient for many people. We think these new measures will work, and we will continue to monitor over the weekend and on Monday.

So we know that the congestion at Woolwell to the George has been frustrating for drivers over the past few days – it has been for us as well!

Our engineers have been looking at what we can do to ease the situation, particularly at peak times. And in addition to changing the timings of the crossing, today we have replaced some of the solid barriers around Belliver Roundabout and the merge onto the inbound side of Tavistock Road and replaced them with cones. This means that during peak times we can move the cones to enable more cars to get through. Now, we know this won’t totally fix the problem. But we are on it. Tomorrow we will announce further changes so watch this space.

We have also created a new web page which holds the latest updates on what we are doing. ➡ https://www.plymouth.gov.uk/news/woolwell-congestion-update

Woolwell Matters -Cllr. Nicky Hopwood

Having made representations to Plymouth City Council on Friday, I have this morning escalated congestion issues at the Woolwell to The George scheme with Council Leader Cllr Tudor Evans in a written letter.

I have been working closely with Cllr Nicky Hopwood on this; many of you have also written to me with serious concerns about gridlock at the road works, something I was keen to highlight.

I have asked Cllr Evans to work with contractor Balfour Beatty to explore all possible options to bring about a real improvement on this section of the network.

Woolwell Congestion Update 🚧

We're aware of the traffic congestion on the inbound side of Tavistock Road due to ongoing works for the Woolwell to the George scheme. While these works will bring long-term benefits to the city, we understand the frustration they are causing right now.

Signal engineers are on site today and have adjusted the timings at the crossing to help improve traffic flow. They’ll continue monitoring the situation in the coming days and weeks, making further adjustments if necessary.

We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
