How it all began.......
To understand how it all began we need to start at the beginning of my working career! So I’ve had a very varied work life which ranges from working in the tourism industry to being in charge of marketing and events for an art gallery to Admin work at a doctors surgery, then finally getting into the education business in the zoo world.
Working in the zoo world was such an amazing opportunity. I have worked with a plethora of animals, but the all time favourite was.........CROCODILES! It was a dream to work with them and that dream became a reality. I still can’t believe it myself at how lucky I’ve been. Working in zoos I would be in charge of the education sessions which were happening and found that children’s knowledge of exotic animals from the Rainforest and Africa (as studied well in school in many topics) were exceptional, but when asked about nature on their own doorstep they were stumped. As many people have told me our nature just isn’t as ‘cool’ or as ‘dangerous’ or as ‘fascinating’ as those in other countries, I think look again! Dig deeper! For example......we have the Adder (admittedly our only venomous species, but still got one), slow worms (people tell me they’re common yet so so so much we don’t know about them), limpets (have a brilliant what I like to call body slam technique which would make wrestlers jealous) and the Dragonfly larvae (which look like aliens underwater and have a hinged jaw which will shoot out and catch its prey). As you can tell I could go on for ages.....
So I started to feel a bit dejected and disheartened that people weren’t aware of the wonders right here on their doorstep- choosing to spend more time exploring online, rather than exploring outdoors. I think Environmental Citizenship is hugely important and it is becoming a hot topic nowadays, even in Government- with everyone trying to reduce their use of plastic to save the turtles and dolphins. People who know me will know that I’m a little bit a**l when it comes to recycling and I do believe more education is needed in this area and more recycling bins made readily available.....however having lived in several places in the UK I must admit Bournemouth is very hot on its recycling compared to other areas.
This is where the idea all started. I love education and I love nature! So I wanted to be able to inspire and spread the word about our hidden gems which is where Discover Nature came from. I want to get people excited about what we have here! We have the 2nd largest species of shark in the world visit our oceans!!!!!! Now that is amazing- however 3 years and still not seen it.....yet. Raise awareness with dog walkers regarding walking in nature reserves so dogs don’t get bitten by adders or don’t disturb the wildlife there.
