We have recieved multiple reports of trees that have fallen and blocked roads.

At the moment, trees are blocking roads at Rue De Boumont/Newtown, Rue De Saline, Longis road (near the puffin), Lower Braye road just below Newtown and another down from the Catholic Church in Braye road.

There have also been reports of commercial property at La Corvee that has lost its roof. There is lots of debris on the roads.

Again we would like to ask people to please remain indoors and only travel if necessary.

States of Alderney and Guernsey teams have been meeting online to formulate plans to get these road open as soon as it is safe to do so.

Tomorrow evening Storm Goretti is expected to hit the Bailiwick, with the potential of extremely high winds, with gusts up to Force 12, and heavy rainfall.

Officers from across the public sector met today to put plans in place, and while we are awaiting a final forecast which will be issued tomorrow morning, current projections are that the island could experience serious storm weather through Thursday evening and into Friday.

On that basis, we are asking islanders to stay at home tomorrow evening and overnight for their safety.

Winds are projected to peak at 2100 tomorrow (Thursday) and continue into the early hours of Friday. Wind speeds are not expected to significantly pick up until around 1800.

We’d also ask people to secure their properties; check their gardens for anything that needs to be secured to reduce the risk of flying debris.

The Alderney Harbour Authority have advised that in order to reduce the risk of exposure to the severe wind and tidal conditions, public access will be restricted to the Harbour Facility from 1600 tomorrow afternoon (8 January):

β€’ The Commercial Quay gates will be locked
β€’ Vehicular access to the Admiralty Breakwater will be controlled by barriers placed on the western end of the Glacis road
β€’ Access to the inner harbour will be controlled by barriers at all entrances and exits

The States of Alderney would encourage boat owners to check that their vessels are secure in advance of the forecasted storm force winds and for all residents to avoid coastal areas until the storm has subsided.

An Orange Ice Warning has been issued for Guernsey for tonight.

Temperatures are expected to fall to close to (if not) freezing between 8 and 10pm tonight. Showers are expected overnight and with ground temperatures falling below freezing , with clear skies at times and light to moderate winds, there is a chance this could lead to icy conditions at time across the island.

All road users are requested to take extra care.

This week we hosted some very special visitors at the station.

πŸš’πŸš’Y1&2 would like to say a huge thank you to Mark and the Alderney Fire Station after our wonderful visit this morning.
We had the best time and had so much fun exploring and learning about how fire-fighting has changed since the Great Fire of London in 1666. πŸš’πŸš’

The Alderney Fire Brigade were called out today Thursday November 27 at 09.54 after a 999 call was received to reports of a fire alarm sounding at an office building. On arrival crews were met by lots of office workers who had vacated the building and had assembled at the designated RVP filming our arrival (for their children we were told!) Crews entered the building and soon discovered an activated smoke detector in a small kitchen area with some slightly charred waffles on a plate nearby. A window was opened to allow the remaining smoke to escape. The alarm system was reset and the office workers were allowed back to their desks by 10.15. Still unsure if the offending waffles were consumed. The brigade were back on station by 10.30

Fantastic amount of money raised by Forever Fire Hose since they began in 2019 by making a small amount of poppies from reclaimed fire hose. We love their poppies and every year we wear them, people always comment on how awesome they are. Most importantly though is the nearly Β£77,000 they've raised. Well done to you all. We will continue to wear our fire hose poppies with pride.
