🌩 STORM AUSTEN

Storm Austen is set to hit Wales on Friday, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to make conditions particularly hazardous.

Gusts of 50–60mph are possible, with some coastal and exposed areas potentially seeing winds of 70mph or more. There is still uncertainty over where the strongest gusts will hit.

Storm surges can easily sweep a person off their feet and into difficulty. It really isn’t worth risking your life for a dramatic photograph or video.

The power of water is often on show during a storm as waves crash against harbour walls, piers, and cliffs.

It looks spectacular, but surges can easily sweep a person off their feet and into trouble. All it takes is one wave to drag you out to sea. A dramatic photograph or selfie is not worth risking your life.

Reduce the risks:

🔵 In a storm, stay away from the shoreline to reduce the chances of being swept away.

🔵 If you can feel the spray, you’re likely too close.

🔵 Keep your eyes on the water. Waves and surges can happen unexpectedly.

🔵 Check the tides. Risks can increase as the water comes in.

🔵 Large waves can throw around shingle and debris, so keep your distance.

⛈️ Yellow Weather Warning.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Wales on Friday, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to make conditions particularly hazardous.

📰 Team Responds to Reports of Potential Pollution in the River Neath.

📍 River Neath.

The team were tasked to the River Neath following reports of potential pollution in the area.

Upon arrival, the team carried out a thorough search of the river and Monkstone Marina, focusing on the riverbanks along the Brunel Dock side. During the search, potential signs of pollution were identified close to the riverbank.

Photographs of the area were taken and forwarded to the Operations Room to assist with further assessment and investigation.

Due to the low tide conditions and the absence of any identifiable source of the potential pollution, the team concluded its initial response and stood down pending further investigations.

The incident has been passed on for further assessment, and any additional action will be determined as more information becomes available.

We encourage members of the public who observe potential pollution in our waterways to report their concerns promptly, providing details of the location, the time of observation and, where safe and appropriate, any photographs that may assist with identifying the source.

📰 Team responds to deceased porpoise.

📍 Aberafan Beach.

Our team responded to reports of a deceased porpoise washed ashore on Aberafan Beach.

Coastguard Rescue Officers attended the scene to carry out the necessary measurements and complete the relevant documentation. Photographs and paperwork were then submitted to the Operations Room for onward reporting to the Receiver of Wreck.

Once these procedures had been completed, the porpoise was removed by the local authorities.

📰 Coastguard Responds to Significant Injury on Aberafan Beach.

📟 Attendance Request - 1️⃣0️⃣7️⃣.
📆 06/10/26.
🕑 07:49.
📍 Aberafan Beach.

Our team was tasked to Aberafan Beach following reports of a male casualty who had sustained a significant knee dislocation.

Upon arrival, Coastguard Rescue Officers carried out a full casualty care assessment, establishing the extent of his injuries and ensuring he was kept as comfortable as possible.

The casualty was continuously monitored throughout, with the team taking appropriate measures to support and stabilise the injured limb while awaiting further medical assistance.

Shortly afterwards, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) arrived on scene and took over the casualty’s further treatment and medical management.

Once the casualty had been appropriately assessed and treated, our team assisted with his safe extraction from the beach to the waiting ambulance, where he was transferred into the care of the ambulance service.

We would like to wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery and hope he is back on his feet soon.

📰 September Update

In the month of September the team responded to 7️⃣ emergency call-outs involving:

🔵 Casualty care.
🔵 Despondents.
🔵 Missing Persons.

We operated closely alongside our valued partner agencies:
📟 Porthcawl Coastguard.
📟 Mumbles Coastguard...and other valued emergency services

Beyond incidents our team continued regular training exercises and coastal patrols to ensure operational readiness and maintain a visible presence along our coastline.

Our team was tasked to assist South Wales Police following reports of a person in the water at Aberafan Beach.

Whilst the team were mustering we received news that the casualty was safe with Police.

The team were subsequently stood down and returned to station.

📰 Double Deployment for Port Talbot Coastguard.

📟 Attendance Request - 1️⃣0️⃣4️⃣.

📍 Monkstone Marina.

Our team was tasked to assist South Wales Police following a report of a despondent person in the vicinity of Monkstone Marina.

Whilst our team was mustering at station, we received confirmation that the individual was safe and in the care of Police. As a result, our team was stood down.

🕑 22:12.
📍 Porthcawl Pier.

The second tasking of the day was alongside Porthcawl Coastguard, assisting South Wales Police with a report of a despondent person on Porthcawl Pier.

As the team conducted a search of the pier we had news that the CAS was located safe by Police and therefore stood down.

Our team was tasked alongside Porthcawl Coastguard to assist South Wales Police following reports of a despondent person on Aberafan Beach.

Whilst the team were carrying out a search of an area of interest, we received confirmation that the casualty had been located safely inland.

The team were subsequently stood down and returned to station.
