Sadly, saltmarsh is in decline across the Solent. That’s why we’ve been working to restore this important habitat in Chichester Harbour, at Hackett’s Marsh in the River Hamble and along the River Medina on the Isle of Wight.

Want to help save seagrass on the Isle of Wight?

Each autumn and winter, Project Seagrass run Fragment Walks along the coast at Priory Bay. They need your help to gather seagrass that has been washed ashore and give it a second chance at life.

Project Seagrass has been busy on the Isle of Wight carrying out monitoring of the seagrass they planted at Priory Bay and Thorness...and it's great news!

The seagrass looked healthy, has new shoots and is expanding. 🎉

It all forms part of our work to restore this important habitat on both sides of the Solent as part of the Solent Seascape Project.

Feedback from boaters has already contributed to practical conservation measures, including improved access to seagrass mapping. Now, as part of the Solent Seascape Project, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust ⁠is⁠ updating our understanding of mooring and anchoring practices.⁠

With support from Ocean Legacy Education, we're offering FREE marine field trips and classroom sessions for KS2 and KS3 pupils, led by local marine biologist Theo Vickers Marine Wildlife Photography.

From discovering marine wildlife at Bembridge Ledges to hands-on classroom activities, this is a unique opportunity to connect pupils with the incredible marine environment on their doorstep and learn from a scientist who works in it every day.
