Meet author Aimee Haywood at Southsea Library on Saturday 14 November, 11.30am. She will read from her new picture book 'The Swinging prince' and then run a fun jungle themed craft activity where children can make monkeys. Suitable for ages 6+ and is free to attend.

For the National Year of Reading 2026, Mood-boosting Books is back with a new collection of ten books.

Mood-boosting Books 2026 has been developed by The Reading Agency in partnership with the Booksellers Association. This collection brings together books that readers found feel-good, uplifting and meaningful. It includes fiction and non-fiction and a range of genres from romance to science fiction. Mood-boosting Books celebrates the different ways reading can help us feel good.

The full collection is currently on display at Beddow Library.

New art on the seafront!

Portsmouth City Council has commissioned the colourful Jesmonite sculptures as part of its programme of art commissions linked by the theme 'Navigate'.

This work has been developed in partnership with Aspex Portsmouth with funding from Arts Council England. Flora Duley is an artist based on Hayling Island who creates sculpture and participatory artworks that bring people together through play, interaction and shared experiences - and conducted some of her research at the Portsmouth History Centre.

'Call For Play' has been developed through engagement with community groups from across Portsmouth in a series of workshops exploring ideas of play, recreation and the seaside.

Andy's drawing workshop for children is happening this Saturday at North End Library at 1-3pm. Aimed at children aged 7-16 this session is for youngsters interested in improving their drawing skills.

Suitable for beginners or the more advanced. Materials will be provided but you can bring your own if you wish - Andy will show you how to get the best out of them.

Important announcement!

Portsmouth History Centre will be closed every Wednesday from the 4th November 2026 for six months. This temporary closure is to enable us to undertake essential collections work. We will remain open during our usual hours on all other days as follows:

Monday and Friday: 9:30am to 5:00pm

Tuesday and Thursday: 9:30am to 6:00pm

Saturday: 10:00am to 3:30pm

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
