Hotwalls Studios brings artists and makers together in an exceptional heritage location

This page is set up and run by the makers and artists in residence at the Hotwalls Studios. The website http://www.hotwallsstudios.co.uk is the official link for the studios and management. The beautifully renovated barracks have been transformed in to 13 working studios, which will allow you to watch some of the city's most creative individuals at work, and
where you'll be able to purchase professional pieces from the artists and makers themselves.

Featuring in the window is a selection of new work by Lily that has been made in celebration of Portsmouth 100, including classic Pompey slang and iconic Southsea landmarks that have been turned into colourful, tactile tufted art, and more!

🌟Resident Artists Spotlight Day🌟

Featuring , Studio 12 ✨

Star Girl Sweet Willow is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans the realms of ceramics, illustration and fibre arts.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world, mythical creatures, literature, love and music, each piece is created by hand whilst favouring an earthy colour palette.

Charlotte’s experience of chronic pain deeply influences her creative voice, making her art a space for expressing grief and healing.

✨Throwback Thursday✨

24th October 2009

For the first time in over 10 years, The Round Tower hosted 'The Thief of Time' after being closed for many years. The event showcased local artists exhibiting commissioned work and performances by using the tunnels and arches of Hotwalls, before they became the studios they are today. This was achieved through using a multi projector operation.

🌟Resident Artists Spotlight Day🌟

Introducing , Studio 11

Lucy Mayes is an artist, pigment maker, and educator, working under her long-term project London Pigment.

Lucy specialises in the heritage of pigments and their practical applications, combining historical knowledge with contemporary, sustainable making.

Her craft is grounded in sustainable practice, using non-toxic raw materials and upcycled sources such as brick and roofing slate. This approach is exemplified in her Waste Stream Series, a body of work supported by Heritage Crafts, which explores the creative potential of discarded and overlooked materials.

In her recently published book, The Natural Pigment Handbook (David & Charles Publishing 2025) , Lucy shares a wealth of practical recipes for making low-impact art materials from scratch, alongside historical pigment research and artists’ reflections on colour and materiality.

For those wishing to learn the craft of pigment, paint, and ink making, Lucy runs both group and one-to-one workshops from her studio, as well as delivering courses at institutions such as the V&A and West Dean College. Please visit her website for further information and bookings.

🌟Resident Artists Spotlight Day🌟

graduated in 2012 with a BA in Fine Art. Initially pursuing a pathway in painting, her practice evolved into an interdisciplinary way of working and after graduating she began directing her attention toward the medium of taxidermy. Combining traditional techniques with contemporary vision, her works are characterised by a sense of naturalistic wonder and playful subversion.

Hannah also often produces pieces for the film, TV and fashion industries and creates interior artworks with antique specialist James Gooch (Doe & Hope). All specimens used are ethically sourced and Hannah is a long term member of The Guild of Taxidermists.

This week's Resident Artists Spotlight is Meg Naysmith! ✨

Meg is a small environmentally conscious fashion & textile designer and brand aiming to fight against the textile waste crisis, and promote the circular slow fashion model to help build a more sustainable future of fashion, textiles and accessories.

At the core of Meg lies a passion for all things second-hand. I am drawn to any sign of wear and tear because it tells a story of the garment or fabrics’ previous life, which is something that should be cherished, enhanced and remembered. I believe a products use should be thought about as thoroughly as their design and manufacture. So, as designers, we should be trying to consciously create narratives for the things we are producing to enable consumers to build some form of lasting attachment and therefore put in the effort to prolong its life.

‼️Live performance on Sunday 6th at 12pm‼️

Between Land and Tide is a public art project bringing sculpture, performance, and community participation to spaces across Portsmouth.
Inspired by the sea, tidal ecosystems, and Portsmouth’s coastline, the work features sea born female guardians and a monumental starfish sculpture created from natural and sustainable materials. Through movement and performance, bodies merge with the landscape, shifting between human and sea-like forms.
The work explores connection, environmental fragility, and our relationship with the ocean, inviting audiences to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world.

The programme includes public performances, workshops, and exhibitions taking place across Portsmouth.
