Dear Labour Society,

As you will all know, all face-to-face teaching is to be cancelled along with exams meaning many of you will be returning home (if you have not already) and not returning following the Easter break due to the rise in Covid-19. With the outbreak already infecting over 203,000 (>82,000 recovered) and forecast to increase rapidly In the UK over the coming weeks. I am with a heavy heart announcing that the society will likely not hold another social for the remainder of the academic year.

I know that a few of us (including myself) are in our final year will, therefore, be unable to sign off and say a solemn goodbye to you all, but fortunately, I also know that many of us will return the following year or will see each other outside of university thanks to the friendships the society has helped fostered over these last few months.

As for the remainder of the year, I hope you all stay safe and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and the vulnerable. That means washing your hands, avoiding large gatherings and following governments advice, as detestable listening to Boris Johnson can be. In addition, there is still lots that we can do to reduce the load on our NHS. In addition to taking precautions to reduce infection, we can all continue to look out for our community, checking up on the vulnerable and offering our services to the many local volunteering groups that are now organising delivery of groceries and medicine to those self-isolating.

Find your local group here: https://covidmutualaid.org/

Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to my committee, Luke Georgiou, Charlotte Nürnberg, Elliott Lee and Ryan Harwood for your help in creating such special and enjoyable memories. It brings me displeasure to know we never got around to our PlayZone social (Children's Amusement Centre). Nevertheless, we have grown the membership immensely and together with the local party, we played our part in securing Portsmouth South in General Election just passed. On top of all that, we elected a wonderful new committee for 2020/2021. It has been a pleasure to get to know all of them individually and I am sure together they will take the society to the next level for you all. I look forward to watching the society success from afar next year.

Best wishes!
Jason Yau
President of the Labour Society
