🗓️ 25/26 Skeleton Season Summary 🧊

2026 saw the Royal Navy Skeleton Team and Inter Service Ice Championships return to Lillehammer, Norway for the 2nd year running.

The needs of the Service ran heavily this year resulting in a smaller team than usual but thankfully, returning members were already well versed with the challenging track. As always, several new members were selected to join the team from grassroots and steadily progressed in the sport over the first few days.

The main highlight this year was the introduction of Brogan Crowley (competed for GB in Beijing 2022) who came to coach the team. With her new style of coaching, insights, and wealth of recent sliding experience, she was absolutely invaluable.

Each track has at least one ‘problem child’ corner and Lillehammer’s, ironically, is bend 13. Regardless of the fantastic coaching, all but a few athletes suffered heavy bruises and a few brief visits to A&E but this never halted the team’s determination to give it everything in the IS race.

After 2 days of competition the very experienced RAF teams swept first place in the men’s and women’s races. The RN women came second ahead of some very worthy Army competitors, and the men came in third by default due to having only three athletes. 🏅

The off-season once again sees the team coordinating grassroots events at the University of Bath – the aim of which will be to select new recruits for the 2027 Ice Championships in Igls, Austria. 🇦🇹

It is with profound sadness that the Royal Navy Winter Sports Association mourns the loss of Lieutenant Lily Mae Fisher, who tragically lost her life during a helicopter training exercise on 3 June 2026, alongside Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson and Petty Officer Owen Green.

Lily-Mae was an exceptional officer, athlete, teammate and friend. A dedicated member of the Royal Navy Telemark Team, she proudly represented the Royal Navy at this year's Inter Service Snow Sports Championships, where her talent, determination and commitment were reflected in numerous medal winning performances. Her achievements at both the Inter Services and Royal Navy Championships earned the admiration and respect of all who competed alongside her.

Beyond her success on the slopes, Lily-Mae embodied the very best qualities of our Winter Sports community: professionalism, humility, enthusiasm and an unwavering commitment to her teammates. Her loss will be felt deeply across the Royal Navy Winter Sports Association and by all who had the privilege to know and serve with her.

On behalf of the RNWSA, our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Lily-Mae’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones, as well as the families of Lieutenant Commander Gayson and Petty Officer Green at this incredibly difficult time.
