Portsmouth Green Party has raised concerns about plans to promote horse racing at Gunwharf Quays on Saturday 29 August and says events promoting the commercial racing of animals should not be taking place in the city.

The planned “urban racing yard”, organised as part of National Racehorse Week, will bring racehorses to Gunwharf Quays and is intended to introduce families and other members of the public to horse racing.

Portsmouth Greens believe the event raises serious animal-welfare concerns and risks presenting horse racing to families as harmless entertainment without adequately confronting the suffering and fatalities associated with the industry. In 2025, 192 horses were killed as a result of racing in Great Britain. [1]

The Green Party’s policy is clear: “The Green Party will end the exploitation of animals in all situations where animals are commercially raced. There will be an immediate ban on the whip in horse racing.”

We were honoured to be represented by our Trade Union Liaison Officer and other local party members at the unveiling of the memorial to people from Portsmouth who lost their lives fighting with the International Brigade against fascism in Spain. This bench in Victoria Park commemorates their sacrifice fighting against the dictator General Franco, who was supported by Mussolini and Hi**er. Unfortunately, the fight against fascism continues today.
