Introducing children to books in a series can really help develop a love of reading. One positive experience can turn into a lasting reading habit.

For school staff, the key is to introduce appealing series, making sequels easy to find and celebrate children’s enthusiasm- without insisting that every title must be completed.

🎉…and this is where we can help…🥳 Here at Portsmouth SLS, we’re currently working on promoting books with sequels or that form part of a series. Watch out for special envelopes heading your way soon, complete with a summary of research, a poster to promote the series and a book list summary page for easy reference.

Follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with our latest availability and make your requests in the usual way.

We’re starting off with this hybrid reader text in ‘The Squad’ series by Robin Twiddy.

🏆📕 YEAR 6 BOOK AWARDS 📘🏆

Yesterday Year 6 visited The Kings Theatre for the Portsmouth Book Award winners' event! Pupils from across 21 Portsmouth schools had read the 3 shortlisted books and voted for their favourite. Congratulations to the winning author, Lindsay Galvin for her book ‘The Great Phoenix of London’! The pupils were excited to meet her and hear her talking about her life and journey to becoming an author.

The pupils also designed their own alternative front covers for the three shortlisted books and some of their artwork was displayed on the big screen for all the schools to see! 😍🖼️

Well done to the 9 pupils from Ayrton for having their drawings shortlisted and a huge congratulations to two art winners from our school, Charlotte and Khidr, who both received a certificate and a brand-new book. An additional well done to Charlotte for being nominated as Ayrton’s reading champion! 👏📖🏆

Thank you to Portsmouth School Library Service for organising this event every year! ❤️
