A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
As a private citizen I take great pride in my love of freedom of speech and in the power of open debate and as a society, we aim to embody these values. Over the last few days, a lot of noise has been made in the media and across campus about the decision taken by the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union to block Peter Hitchens from speaking at an event scheduled for this coming Tuesday.
Regardless of where you stand on Peter Hitchens and his views, it is obvious to see that the only way to combat views you find yourself disagreeing with is to openly discuss them in an orderly and respectful manner. By removing the person whose views are not agreed with in this case, Peter Hitchens, you remove the opportunity to openly discuss these views and those who disagree with them the opportunity to openly question and debate them.
The decision to cancel the event is deeply worrying, especially when we have seen the strides taken by the University to improve and climb in the rankings, all of which is been overshadowed by the actions of the The University of Portsmouth Students' Union.
With this in light, Portsmouth University Conservative Association would like to go on the record as being extremely dissatisfied with the decision taken by the Students' Union and we will do everything in our power to make sure this doesn't happen again and hold the students’ union to account for their actions.
It was Benjamin Disraeli who said “a University should be a place of light, of liberty and of learning” if these values are not shared, universities will lose the ability to properly prepare students for life in the real world.
The Conservative Party, and by extension this Association, has always stood for freedom of speech as a fundamental principle. The fact that the Students’ Union has chosen to shut down a speaker because of their opinions is a disgrace. If his opinions are so abhorrent, then he should be allowed to speak, so that debate can counter his stance. By deeming his opinions inappropriate the Union is clearly putting forward a political bias. This is absolutely unacceptable and we stand firmly against this choice. To this end, we would like to see by-laws introduced to stop this blatant disregard for free speech from occurring again.
I would like to thank the committee for their continued support in our mission and hope that you will unite behind us in demanding that freedom of speech is upheld at this University.
