“I’ll just reply quickly…”

That’s all it takes.

A phone call or a quick social media scroll and suddenly your attention isn’t on the hob.

One distraction is all it takes for a kitchen fire to start so stay focused while cooking.

As part of Drowning Prevention Week, we're reminding everyone that open water can be far more dangerous than it looks.

Cold water shock, hidden objects, steep banks and deep water can all pose serious risks, even on a warm day. What looks calm on the surface can quickly become dangerous.

If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember to Float to Live:

1. Tilt your head back and keep your ears submerged
2. Relax and try to control your breathing
3. Move your hands and feet gently to help you stay afloat
4. Once your breathing is under control, call for help
5. If you can, swim to safety

Sue always knew she wanted to be a firefighter but for more than 30 years, she thought it might never happen.

Now, she is proudly serving as an on-call firefighter at Darwen Fire Station and describes it as the best job she has ever done.

Sue’s journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to follow a goal.
On-call firefighting allows her and many others to balance training and emergency response with everyday life, family commitments and other work.

“I think the only thing I can say is that for everyone out there who does have the dream… just do it. Apply now. It’s absolutely the best job I’ve ever done.”

It’s the opening match of the World Cup 2026… all eyes on the game.

But while the football’s on, it’s easy to get distracted in the kitchen.

If you’re cooking, stay focused and keep your attention on the hob.

Stay in the kitchen. Stay alert. Stay safe.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our charity car wash at Ormskirk Fire Station last weekend.

Thanks to all who came along, donated, and got involved on the day, we raised £1,386 for Fire Fighters Charity. We’d also like to thank HSBC for volunteering on the day and generously matching the total, bringing the grand total to an incredible £2,772.

Events like this demonstrate the strength of our local communities, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success.

Your support makes a real difference ❤️

Congratulations to our Firefighter Greg Dunnings, who has officially been recognised by Guinness World Records for setting a new world record for the farthest distance pulling a vehicle in 24 hours.

Greg completed the challenge in 2025, surpassing the previous record of 32 miles in just 14 hours, before going on to achieve an incredible 41.45 miles over 24 hours. The achievement has now been officially confirmed, with Greg receiving his Guinness World Records certificate last week.

The challenge supported three charities:
• Fire Fighters Charity
• SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity
• Coldstream Guards Corps of Drums

Thanks to generous support and private donations, Greg has raised an impressive £11,000 in total. Of this, £1,500 has gone to Fire Fighters Charity, and Greg is hoping to increase this further. If you would like to contribute, donations can be made via Greg's JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/team/gregdunnings

Your text can wait. A fire won't.

Answering a text, scrolling social media or taking a call might seem harmless, but it only takes a moment for a cooking fire to start.

Whether you leave the kitchen or simply turn your attention elsewhere, switch off the heat first.

Stay focused while cooking... fires won't wait.
