Open water safety: speaking up can save lives!

Ahead of RLSS UK’s Drowning Prevention Week, our Aquatics Development Officer has shared water safety resources with local high schools to help raise awareness of the real dangers of open water.

These resources are designed to start important conversations with young people about staying safe in and around water. Please share to spread the word.

🗣️ “Speak Up. Be A Mate.”
RLSS UK’s campaign reminds teenagers that one moment can change everything - one jump, one dare, one “it’ll be fine”.
Young people are encouraged to speak up, trust their instincts, and say: “Nah - it’s not worth it.”

🌊 Hidden dangers of open water include:
• Sudden drops in depth
• Submerged objects
• Cold water temperatures
• Strong currents

❄️ Cold water shock can affect even confident swimmers, causing panic, rapid breathing, and exhaustion. Knowing what to do can save lives:
Float – Breathe – Relax

🚨 If you see someone in trouble:
• Don’t enter the water
• Encourage them to float on their back
• Call 999 immediately
• Throw something that floats to help support them

By sharing this vital safety advice, we’re helping young people stay safe and make smart choices around water this summer.

Learning skills for life 🏊 Our young swimmers have been taking part in fun water safety games this week as part of Drowning Prevention Week.

In this video, one of our swimmers shares why remembering to Float to Live is so important – a simple step that could save a life.

Why Float to Live?
• Helps you stay calm and control your breathing
• Keeps your airway above water so you can call for help
• Conserves energy instead of panicking or struggling
• Gives you time for help to arrive or to plan your next move
• Works in cold water when cold shock makes swimming difficult

Drowning Prevention Week 💙

We’re supporting RLSS UK’s Drowning Prevention Week, a nationwide campaign aimed at helping children and young people stay safe around water.

Drowning Prevention Week focuses on educating 5–17 year olds with essential water safety and lifesaving knowledge, delivered just before the summer holidays - a time when children are outdoors more and spending more time near water.

🌊 The campaign helps young people to:
✔ Understand the risks around water
✔ Learn how to stay safe in different water environments
✔ Know what to do if they or someone else gets into difficulty
✔ Build confidence to enjoy water safely

With the right knowledge and awareness, drowning is preventable. By learning and sharing water safety advice, we can help ensure everyone enjoys the water safely this summer.

We are taking part in RLSS Drowning Prevention Week, running from 13 – 20 June 2026.

As part of this important initiative, we will be dedicating this week of swimming lessons to water safety activities and awareness. To support this, we kindly ask that all children in Stage 3 and above bring: a t-shirt and shorts or pyjamas to their lesson this week. These will be worn in the water to help children experience swimming in everyday clothing.

Why is this important?
Participating in water safety activities helps children to:
• Understand how it feels to swim while clothed
• Learn how to stay calm and safe if they unexpectedly fall into water
• Practise essential lifesaving skills such as floating and safe exits
• Build confidence and awareness around water risks

Drowning prevention is a vital life skill, and these sessions are designed to help children develop the knowledge and confidence needed to stay safe in and around water. We strongly encourage all eligible swimmers to take part in this valuable experience.
