🌞 It has been another fantastic and very busy week for the Mayor of Preston, with plenty of community events taking place across the city despite the heatwave!
💃 The week began at the Windrush Festival in Avenham Park, where the Mayor met with organiser Adrian Murrell and joined residents in celebrating the rich cultural contributions of the Windrush generation. The event brought together people of all ages through music, dance and community spirit, highlighting the lasting legacy of those who helped shape modern Britain.
🎖️ The Mayor was also proud to support Armed Forces Week on the Flag Market, joining veterans, serving personnel, cadets and residents in recognising the dedication and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community. The event was an opportunity to thank those who serve, or have served, and to show Preston's continued support and appreciation.
👏 Continuing the week's celebrations, the Mayor attended the Windrush Day Flag Raising Ceremony at the Town Hall. The event honoured the Windrush generation and their descendants, recognising the invaluable contributions they have made to communities across the UK. Following the ceremony, guests were welcomed into the Town Hall, where they shared personal stories and experiences, creating a moving and inspiring occasion for all involved.
⭐ As part of Refugee Week, the Mayor attended a special event focused on this year's national theme, 'Community as a Superpower'. The gathering celebrated the strength, courage and resilience of those who have rebuilt their lives after being forced to leave their home countries, while also recognising the importance of creating welcoming and inclusive communities.
🧱 The Mayor also visited Preston College, where she met construction apprentices and trainers to learn more about the skills being developed by the next generation of workers. She even had the opportunity to try her hand at bricklaying, gaining a first-hand insight into the training and dedication required in the construction industry.
💻 Another highlight of the week was a visit to Computers 4 Good, an inspiring charity that refurbishes and donates laptops, phones and other technology to community organisations and projects. The Mayor was pleased to learn more about the charity's work tackling digital exclusion and supporting people across the city.
🤝 The week concluded with a visit to the Intact Centre where the Mayor met staff, volunteers and community members to hear about the wide range of support and activities the organisation provides. She also enjoyed exploring the centre's sensory garden, a valuable community space that promotes wellbeing, inclusion and connection.
