As with many historic houses, it can sometimes be difficult to imagine how the rooms were used over the past 500 years. Paintings can offer clues, but the introduction of photography gives us an even better glimpse into Parham’s past.
Here we can see the Great Hall in c.1909, 1923, 1942 and more recently – including a colourised version of one of the historic photographs.
The images show how the room changed over the years, from the time of Robert Nathaniel Cecil George Curzon, 15th Baron Zouche, in 1909, through to the restoration work begun by Clive and Alicia Pearson from 1922.
Further changes came in 1942, when the Canadian Infantry Divisions requisitioned Parham House and Estate during the Second World War.
And finally, we can see the Great Hall as it looks today, following further restoration and careful conservation, helping to preserve the character of the room and reflect how it may have appeared several centuries ago.
It’s fascinating to see the layers of Parham’s history revealed through these photographs.
