With energy prices rising 13% on 1st July 2026, it's worth knowing that leaving chargers plugged in -- even when they're not charging anything -- is quietly adding to your bill.

Energy expert Glen Fariva from the University of Melbourne explains that while one charger uses very little power on its own, the average UK home has up to 41 electrical devices. Add up all the standby power across your home and it could cost you more than £75 a year -- just from leaving things plugged in.

The fix is simple -- unplug chargers when you're not using them, or switch them off at the wall.

And if a charger feels warmer than usual, makes noise, or looks damaged -- replace it. Cheap, uncertified chargers in particular can be a fire hazard.
