Have you spotted the beautiful new hand-painted sign on the corner of Oxford Rd / Russell St?
It was commissioned by Reading Borough Council as part of Reading’s High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, supported by Historic England and Reading Council
The sign celebrates the people and history of the row of shops, known as Hampden Place in the heart of Reading’s Russel St/Baker St/Oxford Road Conservation area.
The beautiful traditional hand-painted sign is by the very talented Momo Signs
A huge thank you to Evelyn Williams, Reading Conservation Area Advisory Committee , Reading Civic Society for extensive research into the history of these buildings and residents.
The new sign was commissioned following extensive investigation by Cliveden Conservation Workshop found no trace of the old ‘ghost sign’.
Thank you to the Planning and Highways and Transport teams for the support
The HSHAZ programme was designed to secure lasting improvements and breathe new life into the high street for the communities and businesses that use them. Reading HSHAZ celebrated the rich heritage of three conservation high streets through repair and improvement works as well as community and cultural activity.
