Hello food lady, where’s our din din?

These are the five hoglets that were hand reared, happily chomping on food independently for over a week now 🥰 they all weigh over 170g! Soon they’ll be separated into same gender groups. When they reach 450g they will be released in gardens that provide cat biscuits, water and hedgehog house all year.

VOLUNTEER WEEK

Volunteers are the backbone of charities. It’s no different in Herbie Hedgehog Rescue. Without the dedication of our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to help the hedgehogs that we do.

From cleaning cages in the rescue, occasional transport for hedgehogs to fundraising in events, Team Herbie is always busy!

A huge thank you to all my volunteers for their commitment and the hours they put in to help hedgehogs.

Earlier this week, I cleaned out the mums cage where she had given birth. Four little hoglets and one of them is a runt weighing just 22g on day 5! The other hoglets weighed 48-50g!! She is feeding them all well so the hope is that the runt will make it through.
It’s babies everywhere in the rescue right now, another hedgehog who had come in due to getting caught in a rat trap has given birth overnight. We now have at least 20 hoglets in the rescue! Thankfully some of the boys who had come in due to illness or injuries are getting released this weekend. We’re still admitting adult hogs with injuries which balances out the babies in the rescue.

Sadly a very common thing that I face almost daily. I’m a one woman show that manages rescues and releases so there are restrictions in terms of admissions, collections etc as I also have a full time paying job outside of the rescue world. Sadly I often get people saying they will leave the hedgehog to die.

Please respect the charity’s limitations when we say we are closed or cannot collect. As we are all
adults, the onus is on all of us and not just the rehabber, to help an animal that needs it.

The five babies are now being weaned off hand feeds. They’re being given jam jar lids with formula and are learning to be independent. They will be introduced to puppy mousse soon. This is the messiest phase as they walk in the formula trashing the incubator.

In other news, one of the recent admissions who was on pregnancy watch has given birth. There were three babies that were visible. The mum
Needed antibiotics for her infected wound and I managed to get in seven days of it. She will not be handled and left alone. Safe from any hazards, she has a safe place with food and water to care for her babies.

The babies are settling in with the feeds now. They’re gaining weight slowly and hopefully will continue to do so 🦔🦔

Hoglet is fed a special formula, not milk.

In the last 24 hrs I’ve admitted 9 hoglets that were found without their mum. This litter of five have had their eyes opened recently but have no teeth. They were found when one of the babies started screaming for mum in an old unused shed. A kind supporter transported the litter all way from Staines.

They will need hand feeds of special formula every 3-4 hrs and a break of 6 hours overnight. They had their warm subcut fluids upon arrival and a feed of oral rehydration. Once they’re more settled, they will be started on formula.

Hand rearing is exhausting work as we have to follow very strict hygiene with sterilising all the equipments used before every feed. And the rescue is full of hogs of various sizes needing medications, wound treatment etc. it’s goodbye to sleep for a few days!

Today I’ve admitted the hundredth admission of 2026 - a hypothermic, dehydrated juvenile who is now in one of the incubators and has been given warm subcut fluids. Last year we reached this number on the 15th of June! This year we’ve had hedgehogs come in found in various circumstances. Caught in rat traps, garden netting, sports netting, dog attacks, strimmer injuries, road traffic accidents, fallen into an empty swimming pool to name a few.

Whilst I admit anywhere between two and four hedgehogs daily on an average, releases of rehabilitated hedgehogs are also happening to make space for ones needing help. Pictured here is Sparrow who was caught in a snapping rat trap. She was lucky enough to not break her leg in those awful, cruel traps and escaping with a minor injury to her leg. She was released over the weekend in one of my release sites where there is no threat of any traps and food, water available in abundance.

Last week we had incredible support at our annual plant sale!! We raised £1394.61 on the day!! A huge thank you to everyone who bought plants from us or just popped in to give us a donation.

All money raised from our fundraisers go towards helping hedgehogs like this boy without which we wouldn’t be able to do the work we do. More about his story in a few days.

Thanks to our brilliant team of volunteers who grow plants throughout the year to bring the variety and good quality plants to the event. Thank you to our volunteers who helped out on the day and also back in the rescue cleaning out the hedgehogs. A special thank you to David who made the amazing hedgehog house to the raffle that was won by Wendy. And to Jo who not only grew lots of plants for the sale but also donated two tickets to a show at The Mill, Sonning which was won by Nina.
