Reculver 1943: The Bouncing Bomb Trials
Mission Ready

By the end of April 1943, the bouncing bomb design had been finalised.

The successful cylindrical version tested at Reculver would soon be used in one of the most famous wartime operations in history, Operation Chastise.

From the quiet shores of Kent to the dams of Germany, the story of the Dambusters truly began here.

On a day that honours courage and tradition, there’s no better place to reflect on the layers of history that have shaped our nation.

Reculver 1943: The Bouncing Bomb Trials
A Critical Decision

After repeated failures, including a third unsuccessful test where the outer casing broke apart, a crucial decision was made.

The spherical design was abandoned.
Instead, focus shifted to the core steel cylinder a simpler but far more robust solution.

It was a turning point in the development of the weapon.

Without this moment, the mission that followed may never have succeeded.

Reculver 1943: The Bouncing Bomb Trials
Testing Under Pressure

By 21 April, testing intensified along the coast at Reculver.

Early versions of the bouncing bomb used a spherical casing, but there was a major problem.
On impact with the water, the casing often shattered.

Each failed test brought engineers closer to a solution… but also closer to the looming deadline.
