A BUSY HALF TERM FINISHING WITH BATS, HEDGEHOGS, BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS!

We had a busy Half Term with the week finishing with our Local Wildlife Days when we were joined by Tees valley Wildlife Trust, Cleveland Bat Group and Ann Hedgehogs--A big THANK YOU to Olivia, Simon, Dave, Sonia & Ann.

We also did a bat and Moth survey with over 22 species of Moth recorded and 4 species of Bat including Noctule, Natterers, and Daubentons--with Common Pipistrelle being the most numerous--they were recorded over 250 times in one evening around the Centre!

As part of our Wild Kirkleatham project we have, over the last few years planted Hundreds of Trees, Rows of Native Hedgerows and thousands of Spring Bulbs --all to help make Kirkleatham a welcoming home to Wildlife--and hopefully this has contributed to the abundance of Moths, Bats and other Wildlife we are recording!

These 2, who are around five weeks old are currently being reared and will hopefully fly in our Flying displays alongside Wally our adult Kookaburra-we are hoping they and Wally will be friends and flock-mates--though at the moment Wally is making it very clear he prefers his own company! (it may take a little while!)

CAKE WITH FRIENDS TO FINISH A BIRTHDAY WEEKEND!

Sophie has had a fantastic Birthday Weekend and met hundreds of her adorning fans (she actually seems a bit worn out!) she received lots of gifts and lots of brilliant cards.

And no Birthday would be complete without a cake--walnut, with extra walnuts! and of course you should share your cake with your friends--or in this case Henry the Amazon parrot--maybe 'friend' is too strong a word--they live together and put up with each other--the glare of disapproval from Sophie as Henry took the biggest walnut from the top of the cake was not the friendliest!

A busy, fun few days--and rest assured all the Parrots got to share the treats!

SOPHIE'S BIG BIRTHDAY WEEKEND
Sat 2/5 Sun 3/5 Bank Holiday Monday 4/5

Yep the girl with the Neon-yellow punk crest, the head scratch queen herself! is celebrating a big birthday--Sophie our Yellow Crested Cockatoo is the big 40!

Without doubt one of our most popular residents--We don't know much of her early years but she has had a number of homes before coming to Kirkleatham, but for the last decade she has lived with us and after arriving slightly feather plucked she has thrived on the attention from HER visitors (and make no mistake she sees you as HER visitors!) her favorite thing is spending all day chatting to her adoring fans and letting a chosen few scratch her head!

And for such a big birthday a party wont do--so shes making a long weekend of it!--We will have a packed weekend of activities including--

12:00pm Meet & Greet
2:30pm Daily Flying Display
All Day Children's Craft--make Sophie a birthday card.
There might even be a cake!

And she will definitely appreciate Birthday Gifts--she even has a Birthday list on Amazon!

Though any gifts brought in will have to be given to us first to prevent a squabble with the other parrots--she has been told that presents must be shared!

We are open from 10:00am to 4:30pm across the Bank Holiday Weekend.

ELMO'S CHRISTMAS SCARF

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the land
a cold wind it did howl and a chill it did cause,
to even the most fluffy and downy of owls
But for one little Barn Owl a gift he received - a scarf - hand knitted to keep him comfy and warm!

Young Niamh who sponsors Elmo our Barn Owl learnt to knit over the summer and with winter coming she wanted to knit Elmo a scarf to help keep him warm during the cold nights--and although Barn Owls are not often seen wearing scarfs, Elmo was very happy with his beautifully knitted winter scarf!

To all our brilliant visitors & supporters like Niamh we would like to wish you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR from all at the Owl Centre --Feathered, Furred, Scaled and Human! and look forward to welcoming you back in 2026.
