It was a huge honour to attend the flag raising in Banstead this morning, marking the start Armed Forces Week, and ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

We raise the flag in honour of all who have worn, and who continue to wear the uniform of our Armed Forces.

We remember those who gave everything, those who returned bearing unseen burdens, and those who stand ready to serve today.

May this flag remind us that freedom is never free, that peace is precious, and that service to others is among the highest callings.

With gratitude, respect, and remembrance, we honour them all.

My sincere thanks to members of the Banstead & District Branch-RBL who kindly organised the flag raising event, and to those who took the time to attend.

We were pleased to be invited to the Banstead District Scouts AGM and barbecue, attended by the Leaders and other volunteers from all the individual scout groups. Some great achievements and plans for the future. Good to see all groups and sections working closely together - surely one of the strongest scouting districts in Surrey.

I joined Cllr Mark Nuti, County Council portfolio for Health and Communities and Cllr Jonathan Essex to launch the Redhill Library of Things. It’s a brilliant idea to borrow expensive items you only need occasionally, saving money and storage. Pressure washers, wallpaper steamers, DIY items, gardening tools etc. It’s FREE and located within the main Redhill library.

The scheme is run by volunteers under chair, Laurie Reynolds. Motto: “Share rather than Own.”

The Macmillan Cancer Support Centre at the Surrey & Sussex Hospital in Redhill has been open for 10 years, providing support, advice, a friendly ear and therapy sessions for cancer sufferers. We were pleased to recognise the work Macmillan does with its volunteers. The Celebration was well supported by the NHS, recognising the importance of the work of Macmillan alongside the hospital.

The Rotary Club of Redhill Redstone presented an entertaining Charity Choir Concert at St Mary’s Church, Reigate. We enjoyed the Include Choir, celebrating ten years’ of friendship, music making and inclusion through song. Inspiring. Featured pianists were Eloise Kiernanader, Henry Hove, Emily Zhuang and Rufus Ma.
The Franklin Voices and Band under conductor and pianist Nikki Franklin gave us a wide range of musical styles with singers from across Surrey.

With the Police and Fire & Rescue at a very wet bbq with the Kenyans in South England. Very welcoming Family Fun Day - mutual support for first and second generation Kenyans making a life in the UK.

We met the Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust, set up by Kevin’s family to encourage people to sign up to the stem call donor register. Kevin was a remarkable young man who lost his battle with leukaemia after failing to obtain a stem cell donor. People from the East Africa Region are under represented on the Stem Cell Register. A simple saliva swab is all that is needed to place you onto the Register.

We were delighted to join Louise Miller and volunteers at the Gatton Trust to launch the crowdfunding campaign to restore Gatton Town Hall, a Grade II* listed monument. An important part of Reigate’s political landscape at the heart of one of the country’s most notorious “rotten boroughs”. The cast iron ornamental Doric Temple and voting urn was used to announce parliamentary election results, when up to the 1832 Reform Act just seven voters voted to send two MP’s to Westminster! After standing for 260 years, £50,000 is now needed to restore the monument.
Help to meet the crowdfunding target by searching for “Gatton” at crowdfunder.co.uk

The Gatton Trust manages Gatton Hall and tea room, the Capability Brown parkland, with a restored Japanese Garden added in Edwardian times. Open Days are on the first Sunday of the month - plus summer holiday and half-term activities. Book at gattonpark.co.uk. I recommend a visit!

On a wet and windy Saturday I was pleased to join the doctors, staff and patients of the Longcroft Clinic in Banstead at the Banstead Woods Park Run, organised by Dr Subo Emanuel. An encouragement to exercise, fitness and companionship in a beautiful part of our borough. The Banstead Park Run was the third one established in the country. It takes place every Saturday at 9:00 am - whatever the weather.

We were delighted to attend the Reigate & Banstead GLL - Better Sports Foundation awards at the Horley Anderson Leisure Centre. Fifty one local athletes received recognition and £38,000 in funding. 14 different sports were represented with 58% of athletes under 21. The event celebrated their achievements and commitment to their sport in front of family and friends. A spur to meet further ambitions!

The Mayoress and I attended the late Spring Show and Open Day of the Banstead Horticultural Society. A magnificent number of entries and some worthy winners. Besides the plants and flowers, many local organisations were present spreading the word. This included the Banstead Wildlife Field - recently awarded CIL funding to upgrade the field in Bolters Lane - plus the Banstead Commons Conservators, the Banstead Arts Festival Society, and local bonsai and alpine specialists. Their next event is Saturday 20th June with the Early Summer Flower Show.
