đŸŽ«Heritage Open Day at the Town Hall

Join us on Friday 12 September to explore displays from two local heritage organisations in the Back and Front Committee Rooms.

📜 Redhill History Centre will be showcasing photographs, maps and documents relating to Redhill, Reigate, Merstham, Earlswood, Nutfield, Woodhatch, South Park and beyond. Whether you're researching your family history, have a local history question, or simply want to share a memory, come along and chat with the team. The Centre base is located on the second floor of Redhill Library. The Centre is manned between 2-4pm on the first and third Saturday of the month, apart from August when the Centre is closed

🏛 Reigate Priory Museum Society will be presenting a small display of items from its collection. All the objects on display have been chosen as they have a direct connection to Reigate. Also on show will be information boards telling the story of the founding of the Museum in Reigate Priory, in 1973, and its history since, until it’s closure in 2011.

This is a great opportunity to discover more about our local heritage.

The Deputy Mayor was delighted to attend Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Open Day at Woodhatch Place in Reigate on Saturday.

The morning began with a briefing from the Fire Fighters Charity, who spoke to the Deputy Mayor, Surrey’s Lord Lieutenant Michael More-Molyneux CVO, Surrey’s High Sheriff Joosje Hamilton DL and the Chairman of Surrey County Council Cllr Tim Hall MBE. The briefing included the vital work the charity provides supporting members of the fire services community and their families, both during and after service. From clinical care and personal wellbeing to practical support, the charity is there when people need it most.

The party then joined other visitors who were already enjoying a fantastic range of activities, food stalls and demonstrations, while getting a closer look at the equipment, vehicles and machinery used by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

The Deputy Mayor was particularly pleased to meet representatives from the , who were providing free refreshments to visitors as part of their support for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. RRT does remarkable work providing catering assistance and practical support to charities, government organisations and emergency services around the world, often responding where help is needed most.

There was also a very welcome four-legged introduction to Dexter, one of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s two wellbeing and trauma support dogs. Alongside Ciel, Dexter plays an important role in helping staff cope with operational stress and mental fatigue - and, needless to say, the Deputy Mayor was very happy to meet him!

All-in-all, this year’s Open Day was a huge success, bringing together families and visitors for a fun, informative and engaging day.

The Deputy Mayor would like to thank everyone who helped make the event such a success, including the many local volunteers and, in particular, Tony, who kindly took the time to show him around and explain everything that was going on.

A wonderful celebration of the people who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

The Deputy Mayor was delighted to join members and supporters of Banstead Village in Bloom to celebrate the organisation’s 10th anniversary.

At a time when so many high streets across the country are facing real challenges, the hard work, enthusiasm and community spirit of Banstead Village in Bloom’s volunteers over the past decade have helped Banstead High Street buck the trend and quite literally blossom.

As an avid - albeit very amateur! - gardener himself, and proudly modelling one of his own home-grown dahlias for the occasion, the Deputy Mayor recognised Banstead Village in Bloom’s remarkable achievements, including a prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Gold Award and reaching the final selection stage of the King’s Award for Voluntary Service - a fantastic testament to the dedication and commitment of everyone involved.

The Deputy Mayor would also like to pay tribute to the many BVIB volunteers who give up their time to litter-pick around the village. Their efforts make a real difference, and Banstead would undoubtedly be a very different place without them.

A huge thank you to everyone at Banstead Village in Bloom for everything you do - and here’s to the next ten years!

A dozen teams of stalwarts of walking rugby certainly were, at last weekend’s Reigate Walking Rugby Festival. It’s a bit like rugby sevens touch rugby (although I did see a fair amount of running), with both sexes and all ages. I was invited by the Parkinson ‘s UK team and also competing were a joint team of Old Reigatians and Reigate RFC, plus a Pilgrim’s Brewery team. No overall winners, but a cup for the team from Sutton & Epsom RFC which embodied the ethos of the game.

I was pleased to meet the five Founding Charity Partners at the Glow Network Reigate Community Evening - Stripey Stork, the Dylan Strong Foundation, PSDS, Reigate & Banstead Community Fund and Renewed Hope. Ten teams of different nationalities around the Borough competed in the Unity Football Cup competition held at Carrington School, Redhill. The competition is an annual celebration, reflecting the rich diversity in the Borough. The vision is simple - to use football as a platform to unite communities, celebrate culture, strengthen partnerships and connect people. The event is organised by Oscar from So Online Radio and the Voices Together project.

The team from Mauritius were winners (2-1) beating the West Indies, with Somalia and Zimbabwe (last year’s winners), the losing semi-finalists. Well done!

I was fortunate to join the Royal Naval Association, Reigate Branch when it held a poignant commemoration at the grave of Commander John Kerans DSO RN at St Peter’s Churchyard, Tandridge. Commander Kerans captained HMS Amethyst when it was detained by communist forces in 1949 during the Chinese Civil War. HMS Consort, HMS Black Swan and HMS London faced heavy artillery fire whilst attempting rescue in what was known as The Yangtze Incident. In the end, HMS Amethyst in a subterfuge managed to slip away under cover of darkness. Forty-seven seamen lost their lives in action and their sacrifice was remembered at the graveside service. RIP
