Cold water shock can happen faster than you think.
UK inland waters, including those in Surrey, are usually below 15°C. Even if the surface feels warm, colder water beneath can quickly cool your body.
Jumping straight in, especially from a height, can trigger an involuntary gasp reflex, meaning you could inhale water. It only takes a small cup to drown.
So:
👉 Enter the water slowly and give your body time to adjust.
👉 Avoid jumping or diving in.
👉 Take regular breaks to check how the cold is affecting you.
👉 If you fall in, Float to Live to regain control.
In an emergency, call 999. Do not enter the water to try to rescue someone.
Respect the water. It’s colder than it looks.
