This Volunteering Week, we’re shining a light on our incredible Independent Visitors and encourage new volunteers to get involved!

“Seeing my Independent Visitor (IV) is fun. I’d be sad if I couldn’t. I want the visits to last forever.”

Young people in care may experience uncertainty and change. An Independent Visitor is a stable presence—someone to talk to, share experiences with, and have fun.

One visit at a time, you can change a young person’s world.

Earlier this Spring, colleagues from across the Communities Service attended People’s Assemblies training, which is a valuable programme that supports inclusive engagement and strengthens our community led work. 🤝

The training was in person and took place over 2 days. The first day the team took part in activities learning how to build confidence, awareness, and practical skills to listen deeply, build trust and support inclusive dialogue. The team also practiced using open and powerful questions to help decision making and actions. The second day built on the listening skills learnt on the first day to create and hold spaces for positive, inclusive participation.

This training has given the team so much to put into practice in their work with residents and in their day-to-day contact with each other. Below are a few reflections from participants of the day!

💬 “When questions become personal, they become authentic and that’s when you get what people really think and feel.”

💬 “I left that facilitation session knowing exactly what great facilitation looks like, because if everyone leaves a session I've facilitated feeling that close together, then I’ve accomplished what I came there to accomplish.”

💬 “It’s already changing how I work. I’m questioning whether we’re asking the right questions and creating the right environments, especially when engaging with residents and young people.”

We’ve had an amazing May, as our social media channels have been packed with events, celebrations and employee recognition! Check out our highlights below!

🌺 Tenants at Rodney House and Langdown House, (two of our in-house supported independent living services) made the most of the sunny weather! The sunshine has brought a sense of renewal and enjoyment, with everyone finding their own way to appreciate the brighter days and it’s moments like these that highlight the positive and supportive environment that our teams help create every day!

✨ We celebrated Trung, who’s a Senior Traffic Systems Optimisation Engineer here at Surrey. Through Surrey Adult Learning’s apprenticeship programme, Trung completed a Team Leader/Supervisor Level 3 apprenticeship, developing his leadership skills, building confidence and achieving a Distinction — all while balancing a demanding role!

🍰 For Foster Care Fortnight, our fantastic Fostering service brought together foster carers, partners and senior leaders for Afternoon Tea at Woodhatch Place, as an opportunity to say thank you and reflect on the collective effort that underpins fostering locally. The event provided a relaxed space to recognise carers’ contributions, with raffles, wellbeing activities and opportunities to connect with colleagues and partner services.

⭐ We shared about the Advancing Practice Programme! Following a competitive application process, The Surrey Adults Academy were delighted to welcome a cohort of 15 Occupational Therapists and Social Workers to the programme. The new cohorts are looking forward to advancing their practice and be equipped with skills to support them to step into senior and leadership roles in adult social care.

What a busy month it's been! Stay tuned for more exciting updates and summer stories ahead!

Our Surrey Adults Academy came together to celebrate the achievements of our newly qualified Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Social Workers (SWs)! 🥳

As part of the celebrations, our new practitioners also heard from Laura, who shared her inspiring career journey as an OT and offered valuable reflections for those just starting out. 🌟

Reflecting on the day, Anja, our Head of Academy and Principal Social Worker, said:

💬 “It was wonderful (and important) to take time out and celebrate what our newly qualified OTs and SWs have achieved! I loved the buzz and energy in the room and feel proud to work with such dedicated practitioners!”

A huge congratulations to one of our amazing Senior Occupational Therapist, Louise, on winning silver with Team GB at the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships! 🏒🎊

At Surrey, we’re proud to support colleagues to thrive both in and outside of work, whether that’s elite sport, volunteering, caring responsibilities or creative projects! Speaking about managing both her hockey commitments and her role at Surrey, Louise shares:

“Balancing elite sport with a professional role isn’t something I could do without support. I’m incredibly grateful for how accommodating and understanding Surrey has been.
If I could offer one piece of advice to colleagues with big ambitions outside of work, it would be this, enjoy what you do. When you’re having fun, you perform at your best. Balancing work and passion projects comes down to communication, organisation and not feeling like you have to sacrifice one dream for another.

Sport has given me skills that I use every day at work such as teamwork, resilience and leadership above all. Having been part of teams from such a young age, collaboration comes naturally to me, and I love being part of the Learning Disabilities & Autism East (LD&A) team. As a senior OT, I can clearly see how hockey has shaped my leadership style and my ability to work with others towards shared goals”.

Join us in celebrating Louise’s incredible achievement 🥳
