Getting stuck in the mud can be dangerous ⚠️

There is a risk of sinking deeper, and rising tides can make the situation life-threatening if you’re unable to get free.

If you’re visiting the coast, always check local safety signs for soft sand, mud and other danger areas.

If you ever find yourself stuck in mud:

• Stay calm

• Spread your weight by sitting down or lying back

• Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard

We will be attending this year’s Water Safety Scotland Event at Loch Lomond Shores to mark this year’s World Drowning Prevention Day.

We will be participating along with our colleagues from other emergencies services and organisations.

The free event will take place on the 25th of July, from 1100 to 1500.

Our team will be present throughout the day to provide safety advice, help people learn how to stay safe in and around water & learn more about HM Coastguard.

❌ Don’t give in to peer pressure. Think before you jump!

Jumping from piers, rocks and heights into water can be very dangerous. So please enjoy our beautiful coastline responsibly by not jumping into the unknown 🌊

• Consider the risks to yourself and others. Young people could be watching and may attempt to mimic the activity.

• At the coast the depth of water can dramatically change with the tide and you don’t know what hazards may be lurking under the surface.

• The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim to safety and strong currents can quickly sweep people away.

• Remember: The UK’s seas never get that warm, even in the height of summer.

• HM Coastguard advice is that if you do want to jump from height into the sea we would advise people join a coasteering group with a professional and reputable adventure centre. But the risks are always there.

If you see anybody in trouble or if you get into difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard 📱

Whether you’re with someone who gets into difficulty along the coast, spot someone from a distance and aren’t sure if they need help or think the situation could become serious – call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We’d rather receive a call made with good intent and not be needed, than arrive too late 💙

Remember: Phone, Float, Throw 🛟

It could help save a life but never go in after someone.

The National Water Safety Forum's 2025 Water Incident Database (WAID) gives insight into water-related fatalities in the UK.

Many of those who sadly lost their lives were not intending to enter the water, with cold water shock remaining a hazard. Cold water shock is the body’s involuntary response to sudden immersion in cold water. It causes gasping, panic and loss of swimming ability.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember Float To Live – float on your back with your ears submerged until you can control your breathing and become more acclimatised to the water temperature.

Move your arms gently to help keep you afloat. We all float differently, so it doesn't matter if your legs sink.

If you see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We’d like to remind everyone that flares should only be used in genuine distress situations. They shouldn’t be used for entertainment or as fireworks during celebrations.

We were tasked to an incident on Friday evening following a report of flares, with extensive searches carried out alongside the RNLI Helensburgh and the Ministry of Defence Police Marine Units, with nothing found all assets were stood down.

If we receive an alert at or near the coast where a flare has been launched, we will always respond and won’t know the difference if you are using them as fireworks. This can tie up resources when they're not needed, putting our coastguard rescue teams at unnecessary risk and potentially diverting them from a legitimate emergency.

If you think someone is in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
