The team made the most of the good weather during last night's training, practising a range of water rescue skills including throwlining, bankside safety systems and techniques for working safely in areas (such as exposed coastal structures) where wind or waves can quickly knock you off your feet.

A decent sunset wasn't a bad way to finish the evening either. 🌅

Always check tide times (and weather) before heading to the coast 🌊

Tides follow a predictable pattern, but can change quickly, and it’s easy to get cut off if you haven’t planned ahead.

Rapidly rising seas can trap you in bays, coves or on sandbars, often with little or no warning and no easy escape route.

Tides don't always follow straight lines and can sneak up around and behind you too.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

HM Coastguard is the UK's 999 maritime and coastal emergency service, responding to incidents and helping people in distress around our coastline.

As a Coastguard Rescue Officer, there isn't a typical day.

One day you could be searching for a missing person. The next, providing emergency medical care to an injured walker. Or you could be working alongside your team to safely extricate someone trapped in mud.

Every callout is different. Every day is different.

To be eligible, you must:

• Be 18 years or older
• Live and/or work in the local area
• Hold a full driving licence
• Be fit and healthy

No previous Coastguard experience is required — full training is provided.

🌊🛟 Talacre Beach Mud Rescue 🛟🌊

On Sunday, Rhyl Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to a mud rescue at Talacre Beach.

Three members of our team were already out on patrol when the call came in, with additional team members making their way to Talacre. Flint Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked, as both Rhyl and Flint are specialist mud rescue teams. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service / Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub Gogledd Cymru also attended to assist.

Once the casualty was located, our Rhyl mud rescue technicians quickly donned their specialist equipment. Using their mudders (mud shoes) and sled stretcher, they carefully made their way across the mud to reach the casualty.

The casualty was safely freed from the mud and secured onto the sled. With fantastic assistance from the firefighters from Prestatyn Fire Station, the Coastguard team hauled the mud sled by rope back towards a safe area of the beach.

The casualty was then fully assessed by the Coastguard team and attending paramedic. We are very pleased to say that, apart from being covered in mud, the casualty had no other issues and remained in good humour throughout. 👍

The friends had been walking their dogs on the beach when they came across what appeared to be firm sand. Unfortunately, beneath the thin layer was very soft mud. Both became stuck, with one sinking further than the other.

Thankfully, once they realised one of them was seriously stuck, they did exactly the right thing — they called 999 and asked for the Coastguard.

The casualty also made the important decision to sit down rather than continuing to struggle. This was the right thing to do, as excessive movement can cause someone to sink further into soft mud.

👏 A huge thank you to Flint Coastguard Rescue Team, Prestatyn Fire and Rescue Service and the attending paramedic for their assistance.

If you, or someone you see, gets into difficulty in the sea, sand or mud, don't put yourself at further risk trying to help.
📞 Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🧘 Stay calm.
🛑 Keep movement to a minimum where possible if in sinking mud
🛟 Wait for the specialist teams to arrive.

A calm response and an early call for help can make all the difference.
