BIG NEWS: We've identified over 10,000 flowering plants as EDGE species 🌿
..but what's an EDGE species? EDGE stands for Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered, and the programme provides a way of measuring how genetically unique a particular species is, and how at risk it is of extinction. Working with the ZSL our new research has identified nearly 10,000 flowering plant species as EDGE species. 🌸

From the mighty titan arum to tiny waterlilies small enough to grow in a teacup, every EDGE species matters. Losing them could mean losing millions of years of evolutionary history - and even future discoveries that could benefit people and planet.

Any guesses on what fruit comes from this flower? πŸ’œ
..if you guessed passionfruit, you'd be correct! There are over 550 species of passionflower, some produce edible fruits. The ones found on supermarket shelves are often Passiflora edulis.

But some passion flowers produce poisonous fruit, containing chemicals that combine with enzymes in saliva to produce cyanide.

You can spot a few species blooming in the Princess of Wales Conservatory 🌺

Our Seed Germination Specialists recently travelled to Thailand to work with our partners to help research how seeds respond to rising temperatures.

This research will help identify seeds that may be more resilient in a changing climate, helping restore degraded forests and safeguard threatened and useful tree species.

Because protecting forests starts with protecting their seeds πŸ’š

Did you know your favourite ice cream flavour could be at risk in the wild?🍦

Many wild vanilla species are now threatened by habitat loss and climate change, including Vanilla planifolia, the source of vanilla 🌱

Our scientists and horticulturalists are helping protect vanilla through research and conservation. As a charity, Kew relies on support to continue this vital work for threatened plants and biodiversity.
