A very warm welcome to the Midland Railway – Butterley! A great day out for all of the family with loads to see and do. Heritage train rides transport you to a bygone era. Explore the demonstration signal box, a victorian railwayman’s church and much more. Plus there are narrow gauge, miniature and model railways, shops, buffets, children’s playground and country park.

-Shuttle train from Butterley to Swanwick Junction, frequent services starting at 5pm on both evenings. The last train will leave Butterley for Swanwick at 7pm.

-Enjoy the spectacular fireworks display with music at Swanwick Junction

-Explore Stationary Power Display and Road Transport display

-Visit the Victorian Railwayman’s Church

-Can crush - Head over to the Road Transport Museum for a spectacle you won’t want to miss — our Aveling NCB Road Roller will be crushing cans… and we mean a lot of cans! Watch the action at 7pm each night and see just how heavy-duty this machine can be. It’s loud, it’s impressive, and it’s guaranteed to get a cheer from all ages!

-Take a trip on the Narrow Gauge Train through the Spooky Park if you dare (additional charge)

-Indulge in seasonal food and warming hot drinks

-The buildings stay open after the fireworks display so there is no need to rush home. The last train back is at 9.30pm on both evenings.

Step back in time at our Victorian Train Weekend on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October.

Join us for a special steam-hauled weekend celebrating the golden age of railway travel, with beautifully restored vintage carriages and LMS Jinty 16440, which is celebrating its 100th birthday! 🎈🎈

Our volunteers will be on board in Victorian railway costume, helping to bring the atmosphere of the era to life. Younger visitors can also take part in our special vintage-themed I-Spy competition.

There’s also steam on the Golden Valley Light Railway at Swanwick Junction, with O&K locomotive No. 7529 in action.
GVLR tickets can be purchased at checkout: adult £2.50, child £1, family £5.50

Visitors arriving in Victorian costume can also travel half price on the day.

DOUBLE STEAM ON THE GOLDEN VALLEY LIGHT RAILWAY!
There’s even more steam to enjoy at the Midland Railway-Butterley on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th October!
The Golden Valley Light Railway will be operating TWO steam locomotives across the weekend, giving visitors the chance to enjoy a ride behind steam on this much-loved narrow-gauge railway.
Whether you’re a steam enthusiast, a family looking for something different to enjoy during the autumn holidays, or simply love the sight, sound and smell of a working steam locomotive, there’s plenty to look forward to!
With the Autumn Vintage Train event taking place alongside the GVLR, it’s a great opportunity to make a full day of your visit and explore everything the railway has to offer.

A RARE AUTUMN TREAT!

24th & 25th October!

Our rescheduled Victorian Train Weekend is a great chance to see some of our vintage carriages out on the railway during an autumn weekend — something you don’t normally get to see!

Beautifully restored heritage carriages will be steam-hauled along the line, giving you the chance to experience railway travel as it would have been over 100 years ago.

And with LMS Jinty 16440 celebrating its 100th birthday, there’s even more reason to join us!

Midland Railway Trust volunteers will be on board in authentic period costume, helping bring the atmosphere to life and answering your questions along the way. Younger visitors can also enjoy our special vintage-themed I-Spy competition.

Coming in Victorian costume? You can travel for half price on the day — valid on on-the-day tickets only.

And because it’s an autumn weekend, there’s one important thing to remember…

WRAP UP WARM!

These are genuine heritage carriages and, unlike modern trains, they don’t have steam heating. If the forecast is looking chilly, bring your coats, hats and scarves and make sure the whole family is ready for a cosy day out!

It’s all part of experiencing railway travel the traditional way — a wonderful opportunity to enjoy these historic carriages as they were intended.

There’s plenty more to explore too, including the Golden Valley Light Railway, Railwayman’s Church, West Shed Experience, Road Transport Building, Stationary Power House, Country Park and children’s play area.
