NEWS: ππ©βππ§βπ Firefighters from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have spent the night dealing with a large fire, on the top floors of a derelict high-rise building in Cookridge Street, near the city's Millennium Square, Leeds.
Shortly before 20:00 hours on Saturday night West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service began to receive multiple 999 calls, reporting a large fire at the Grade II listed Leonardo building, a former council property sold to developers for conversion into student accommodation.
Fire appliances and crews from Leeds fire station were the first to arrive at the scene, they found a well developed and rapidly spreading fire involving the upper floors of the building.
A βMake Pumps 10β assistance message for additional appliances and crews, to assist in firefighting and to provide additional water supplies was transmitted to fire control.
This resulted in fire crews from Leeds, Hunslet, Killingbeck, Odsal, Moortown, Morley and Rothwell fire stations attending the incident.
A number of nearby pubs and restaurants were evacuated, with a safety cordon being put in place as the structure was potentially unsafe.
Firefighters worked hard in challenging conditions utilising hand held main jets, aerial and ground monitors to prevent the fire spreading to other adjacent buildings.
Due to the scale of the incident and the potential for casualties the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), from the Yorkshire ambulance service attended the scene to provide support to their fire service colleagues.
As well as Ten pumping appliances, an aerial ladder platform, a command unit, a command support unit, a welfare unit and an aerial support unit were all in attendance at the incident.
Sadly parts of the Leonardo building are reported to have suffered a significant amount of damage during the fire.
There are no reports of any injuries at this time.
The cause of fire remains under investigation by specialist fire investigation officers at this time.
