Drought has been declared in Yorkshire for the second year running.

There are no water restrictions for now. But Yorkshire Water lost more than 260 million litres a day through leaking pipes last year, on its own figures. That’s around 95 billion litres in a year.

I’m calling on Yorkshire Water to step up leak repairs and publish a clearer, detailed leak reduction plan. Residents will always do their bit, but nobody wants a repeat of last year’s hosepipe ban.

We need the reassurance of a ramped-up plan, so we can rest easy knowing the impacts of drought and climate change will be mitigated, and the burden won’t fall on the people whose water bills have already been climbing.

Been made aware that bus pick-up times for 2 schools in Ripon, which are directly opposite each other, have changed with Outwood Academy leaving first. Grammar school pupils must wait 15-20 minutes for the bus to return. This is a ridiculous situation that costs money and impacts on pupils! A meeting is arranged for next week to find a solution. reminder: North Yorkshire Liberal Democrats raised these fixes first.
When the Council reviewed its home-to-school transport policy, Lib Dem Councillor Andrew Murday called for three practical changes to make the system fairer.
Now, two of those three fixes are being taken forward for consultation - including the proposal to allow children to use an existing council bus where one service already serves two schools, such as in Ripon, where Ripon Grammar and Outwood Academy share transport arrangements.
That’s progress. But the bigger issue remains.
📣 The real solution is to restore catchment-based eligibility. The current policy is based on the nearest suitable school, rather than the school serving a child’s catchment area and the council’s review is not proposing to reverse that.
We’ll keep pushing for a school transport system that works for North Yorkshire’s families and rural communities.

Really good to meet with all the voluntary groups and support organisations at the "Connecting Ripon" event yesterday. Representatives included Ripon Library, Ripon Disability Forum, Community House, MIND,Age Concern and of course HADCA (Harrogate & District Community Action). I was able to inform the groups about the upcoming Access to Services networking event on 3rd November and the Climate, Food & Community Cohesion Working group which will be presented at the Green Fair on 17th October. Lots of community work going on in Ripon!
