A small mistake can have big consequences.

This week, one of our refuse collection vehicles caught fire. Thankfully, the crew were safe and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended quickly to bring the situation under control.

While investigating the load, we found items including a v**e, laptop, mobile phone and household batteries.

Fires like this put our crews at risk and take valuable resources away from an already stretched fire service. They can also damage collection vehicles and disrupt waste collections.

Please do not put batteries, v**es, laptops, mobile phones or any other electrical items in your household bins.

Instead, recycle them safely: ♻️ Household batteries can be taken to supermarkets, many shops and Household Waste Recycling Centres. ♻️ Vapes can be returned to retailers that sell them or taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. ♻️ Laptops, mobile phones and other electrical items can be recycled at Household Waste Recycling Centres.

🌡️ The UK Health Security Agency has issued an Amber Heat-Health Alert for our area between 9am on Tuesday 11 August and 9pm on Friday 14 August 2026.

Please take extra care during this period:

✅ Check on older friends, relatives and neighbours – especially those living alone
✅ Never leave children or pets in parked cars
✅ Keep babies and young children shaded, cool and in well-ventilated spaces

Remember to stay cool by:

☀️ Avoiding direct sun between 11am and 3pm
👕 Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing, a hat and sunglasses
🧴 Using SPF 30+ sunscreen (SPF 50 for children) and reapply regularly
💧 Drinking plenty of water and avoid alcohol
🏃 Avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day

Even in hot weather, open water can be dangerous. Make sure to:

🌊 Choose lifeguarded areas where possible
🚫 Never swim after drinking alcohol
🌡️ Enter cold water slowly and stay within your depth
👥 Swim with others whenever possible

Know the signs of heat-related illness:

⚠️ Heat exhaustion: dizziness, weakness, nausea or intense thirst
🚑 Heatstroke (medical emergency): confusion, seizures, very high temperature, or hot skin that stops sweating – call 999 immediately

Our nature reserves will be displaying this poster over the next few weeks as an important reminder to help prevent wildfires during this ongoing heatwave. Our reserves, green spaces, and parks are so dry that even one stray spark could cause a catastrophic wildfire.

Thank you to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for all you are doing – let’s all do our part to minimise any further impact to our emergency services, our countryside, and our wildlife!

Please remember:
🔥 Leave barbecues at home – pack a picnic instead
🚭 Fully extinguish ci******es and dispose of them carefully
🗑️ Take your litter home or use the bins provided
🔥 Don’t start campfires in the countryside
