Fun fact!!! 💥🚒

Ross appliance isn’t your standard fire engine… but do you know why? 🤔

A standard fire engine carries two ladders on the roof a 13.5-metre ladder and a 9-metre ladder.

Our Ross appliance is slightly different. We carry a 9-metre ladder and a rescue platform. 🚒

So, what’s the rescue platform for?

It allows us to back up our crews from Hereford and Droitwich, who have specialist Ultra Heavy appliances, particularly when we’re dealing with incidents involving large vehicles. 🚛🔥

Like all of our equipment, the rescue platform needs to be regularly tested and practised with to make sure it’s ready when we need it most.

So, during this week’s drill night, we took the opportunity to put it through its paces alongside some scenarios using air bags. 💪🧑‍🚒

Tonight we say farewell to CC Dani O’Brien.🚒

Dani joined us at Ross Station in 2019 as a firefighter and progressed to Crew Commander in 2024.

After many years of dedicated service, Dani is moving on to enjoy more quality time with his three young children and his family.

From everyone at Ross Station, we’d like to thank Dani for his hard work, commitment and contribution over the years. We wish him all the very best for the future and everything that lies ahead.🔥👨‍🚒

A different one for us today 🐶

While wildfires have been a major focus for us over the past month, our crews have also been busy attending other jobs too! 🚒

This morning, we rescued the lovely Bonnie 🦮 from a river area. When we arrived she was stuck down a ledge , with are water rescue skills she was swiftly brought to land and cleaned off !

Thankfully, Bonnie is now safe and sound! 🐾

⚠️ We respectfully ask that you carefully reconsider all activities that may cause fire. The smallest spark can turn into a large and uncontrollable fire in a matter of seconds. 👉 Please read our advice below:

❌ Don't have BBQs.
❌ Don't light bonfires.
❌ Don't drop ci******es, matches or smoking materials on the ground.
❌ Don't leave glass bottles or litter in open spaces.
❌ Don't leave mirrors or reflective objects where they could focus sunlight.
❌ Don't use fireworks.
❌ Don't park vehicles on dry grass. Hot exhausts and catalytic converters can start fires.
❌ Don't burn garden waste.
❌ Don't use machinery that creates sparks near dry grass, crops or vegetation.
❌ Don't continue working if equipment is overheating.
❌ Don't ignore damaged exhausts, bearings or brakes that could generate heat or sparks.
❌ Don't let cut grass, straw or debris build up around engines and moving parts.
❌ Don't refuel machinery while it's hot or running.
❌ Don't leave machinery unattended while operating.

12th August was a busy one for Ross crews, with both 441 and 442 attending a number of incidents throughout the day and into the night.🌓

09:05 – 442 attended a large vehicle fire.🚛🔥

14:35 – 442, along with six other appliances from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, attended a field fire in Bridstow. Crews, working alongside local farmers, spent around six hours dealing with the fire before returning to station at 18:30.🔥🌳

20:35 – 442 was mobilised back to Bridstow after hotspots reappeared. Crews dampened down the area and left it safe.🔥

22:12 – 441 and 442 responded to an RTC in the Pontshill area of Ross.🚙

22:57 – Both crews were then mobilised to a second RTC, this time on the A49. Crews returned to home station shortly after midnight.🚗

Over the weekend and into the start of this week, Our Ross appliance, along with appliances from all across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, have attended a significant increase in field fires and fires involving crops and grassland.🔥🌳

With the current hot and dry conditions, fields, crops and grass can become extremely dry, allowing fires to spread rapidly, particularly in windy conditions.

🔥 Please help prevent field fires:

* Do not have bonfires or fires near fields, crops or dry grass.
* Never discard ci******es or smoking materials onto grass or farmland.
* Take extra care when using machinery that could create heat or sparks.
* Avoid activities that could create sparks or ignition sources in dry fields.

🚨 If you see a field fire, call 999 immediately. Give the exact location, including the nearest road, farm or landmark if possible. Do not put yourself at risk trying to tackle a spreading fire🚨

A massive thank you to all the farmers, landowners and members of the public who have spared their time to assist crews at these incidents. Your help, local knowledge, and support have been invaluable in helping our crews tackle these fires safely and effectively.👏🏻

Please stay vigilant and help us protect our countryside, farms, wildlife and communities. One small spark can quickly become a large field fire.🙌🏻

Andy has been part of the service since 2005,proudly following in his dad’s footsteps. He is currently based at JKHS, where you might recognise him from, when he’s not on duty with us.

We’re always looking for committed people to join our on-call crew.

Yesterday evening proved to be a busy one for the crew at Ross.

At 20:09, appliance 442 was mobilised to reports of a bonfire that had reignited. On arrival, crews extinguished the remaining hotspots, dampened down the area and ensured it was left safe for the occupier before returning to station at 22:40

However, the evening was far from over. At 22:45, 442 was mobilised once again, this time to a large agricultural building fire in the Shobdon area of Herefordshire. Working alongside crews from across the county, Ross was tasked with protecting the surrounding area of the building, helping to prevent the fire from spreading while firefighting operations continued.

Crews returned back to station 3:45am

🚒 If you have a bonfire, please ensure it is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended. Even when it appears to be out, it can retain enough heat to reignite hours later.
