Today is the 150th anniversary of the opening of that marvel of Victorian engineering, Lord Armstrong’s Swing Bridge. To celebrate, some of our guides dressed up as very convincing Victorians to walk across the bridge to publicise this landmark date.

The research on Armstrong and his work with Henry Watson by Henrietta Heald is in depth and fascinating. This engineering can be seen insitu here Cragend Silo. The hydraulics formed part of the demonstration centre he modelled for agricultural purposes but also for wider use such as at Tower Bridge .

Our thanks to Henrietta Heald for giving such an informative talk about Lord Armstrong of Cragside's legacy and telling us about the Armstrong Project to save the Banqueting Hall in Newcastle. The Cragend Farm tour was open today to show visitors the hydraulic machinery on sight and raise awareness of Armstrongs great legacy for power and
