In the first of our new series ‘Staff Stories’, we meet Gemma…

🔹“Today, I celebrate 10 years with Action Housing. I started as a volunteer in 2016 before joining one of our Rotherham projects as a Client Liaison Officer later that year. Since then, I've been fortunate to progress through a number of roles including Client Support Worker, Lead Support Worker, Service Manager, and now General Manager of Support Services and Client Engagement. Looking back, I'm incredibly proud of the opportunities I've been given to learn, develop, and grow my career within the organisation.

🔹What has kept me at Action for 10 years is the culture and the people - I've always felt valued, listened to, and supported, regardless of role or position. While there have been challenges along the way, the commitment to both staff and the people we support has always remained strong.

🔹I'm particularly proud that our work is about so much more than providing a roof over someone's head. We take time to understand each person's needs, helping them build confidence, develop new skills, improve their wellbeing, and work towards independent futures. Working alongside partners to provide meaningful, long-term support that helps prevent recurring homelessness is something I feel privileged to be part of everyday.”

💙We would like to congratulate staff member Chequela (‘Kayla’) on achieving a BA Hons in Social Sciences from the Open University!

She has been with Action for 14 months as a Tenancy Sustainment Officer and works on two of our Rotherham-based projects, Restart and Butterfly.

Kayla says…

“From the age of 16 I was in service due to homelessness and with no family support. After moving on, I decided I want to work to give something back. I began a certificate of higher education in 2020 and when I passed that in 2022, I decided I'd go all the way and complete my degree”

🔹We are so glad that you did Kayla and we are all very proud of you and the work you are doing to help our families project. Long may it continue!

🔹On 20th September two of the ladies from our Property & Maintenance Department took part in a 10k run and managed to raise over £1000 for Willow Foundation!

Liz explained…

"In 2018, after a serious illness, Willow gave my husband and I the incredible gift of a week's holiday at Center Parcs. They organised everything from start to finish, and after what had been an incredibly difficult year, it gave us something precious: something to look forward to, time to make happy memories, and a chance to simply be ourselves again.

The support Willow provides goes far beyond holidays. They create unforgettable experiences for seriously ill young adults—from fun-packed family days and peaceful breaks away to meeting lifelong heroes or making dreams come true. Every experience is unique, and everyone creates memories that last a lifetime. Sadly, for some, it’s a last chance to fulfil a dream with the people that really matter. I wanted to give something back."

☕🎃 Macmillan Coffee Morning

What a lovely day of baking, creativity and coming together for a very special cause. 🌿

Our staff and clients on one of our Derby projects got involved with our Coffee Morning, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Alongside the coffee and cake, botanical_moonlightco Botanical Moonlight brought a little Autumn magic to the day with botanical pumpkin making - getting creative and celebrating the season together. 🍂🎃

A special mention goes to one of our clients, who wanted to get involved by baking for the event. Baking is his passion, and it was wonderful to see him share that passion with everyone for such a meaningful cause. ❤️

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, supported and took part. £100 raised, plenty of smiles shared, and a truly special day. 🌿☕💚

☀️With the weather being so lovely over the last few weeks, botanical_moonlightco have been holding their sessions outdoors as much as possible.

🎨Our clients have enjoyed mosaic making and upcycling furniture and some have been making handmade hanging lights, working with resin.

This was quite a challenging project but one that was tackled with great enthusiasm and enjoyment. It’s fair to say our clients really enjoy the varied sessions with Botanical Moonlight Co.

We can’t wait to see what’s next on the agenda.
