Session 2 of our Martyn’s Law community training is now underway!

We’ve had another 17 people join us this evening, taking the opportunity to attend a later session designed to support those who work during the day and help make the training as accessible as possible.

A fantastic turnout and a great example of our community taking the time to learn, understand and prepare. 👏

Session 1 of our community Martyn’s Law training is underway … Session 2 at 6pm this evening!

We’re pleased to have 21 people joining us from groups and organisations across the Dearne.

Today’s session is helping those attending prepare for the introduction of Martyn’s Law, including understanding their responsibilities when planning events or managing a venue.

It’s great to see organisations coming together to build their knowledge, strengthen preparedness and help keep our local communities safe.

We are still actively recruiting volunteer befrienders. Vols must be 18+ and willing to complete an enhanced DBS application. We offer support to complete the form if required, I can meet vols in the local area to do the whole application form. Vols need to have 3 forms of ID to complete the ID check, I can go through this with anyone interested. b:friend covers the cost of the DBS check.
Vols must be able to commit to visiting their older neighbour for 1hr a week.
We also have an opportunity for a social club volunteer at our Thurnscoe. This club meets every Monday, 10:00 - 12:00 at the Rainbow Centre. We ask that anyone interested in supporting here could be available from 9:30am to support with setting up for the session. Volunteers would be expected to help with refreshments and join in the activities being delivered.

Plenty of space at the Goldthorpe Club - Monday 13:30 - 15:30 in the upstairs room at the Library. All older adults welcome (we can be more flexible with clubs so adults 55+ would be suitable). Thurnscoe and Bolton Clubs are currently at capacity and have a waiting list. The waiting lists will be reviewed in January 2027.

Also on hand we have The council’s Warmer Homes Team helps residents to:
Access advice on reducing energy bills and managing energy debt.
Explore grants for heating, boilers and insulation, subject to eligibility.
Get referrals for energy advice and support for people vulnerable to cold weather.

Alongside the Housing team sharing advice on home issues.

Our Dearne elected members recognise the importance of supporting the fantastic volunteers who help keep our communities clean and welcoming.

They have recently funded new litter-picking equipment to support volunteers across the Dearne, including new trolleys, litter pickers, hi-vis vests and safety guidance.

This investment will help make litter-picking safer, easier and more accessible for volunteers across our communities.

A big thank you to all our dedicated volunteers for the time and effort you put into making the Dearne a cleaner, greener and better place to live. 💚
