🌋 This week in Science Club, students continued exploring our STEM theme by learning how to create their own volcanoes and investigating the chemical reactions behind a volcanic eruption. They used everyday household materials to build and decorate their volcano models. They folded and cut a piece of A5 card to create a volcano-shaped opening that fitted over a plastic container, then painted it in volcanic colours and left it to dry.

While their models dried, the students prepared their mixtures using sodium hydrogen carbonate, salt, washing-up liquid and food colouring. They then quickly added 200ml of vinegar and watched as their homemade volcanoes erupted! This hands-on activity was a great way to develop their practical science skills, explore chemical reactions and see science in action.

🌧️ As the weather changes and seasonal bugs become more frequent, we want to ensure every student is supported to maintain strong attendance wherever possible especially during these last two weeks of the half term.

To support students in school when they are not feeling 100% we are introducing the "Under the Weather" Form. If your child is experiencing mild symptoms we would encourage them to come into school and give the day a try. Complete the form to let the attendance team know how your child is feeling.

By completing the form we will:
• Let the relevant staff know that your child is feeling unwell.
• Check in with your child during the school day.
• Provide appropriate support where possible.
• Contact you sooner if we become concerned that your child is too unwell to remain in school.

⛰️ On Friday 9th October, Year 11 OCR Sport Studies students travelled to Burbage Moor in the Peak District to complete their assessment walk as part of their Outdoor Adventurous Activities unit.

Throughout the day, the students demonstrated excellent teamwork and navigation skills, supporting one another and working together to overcome challenges. Despite the difficult weather conditions, they showed great determination and perseverance to successfully complete the walk. The students were a real credit to Thrybergh Academy – Mr Duckworth and Mr Casely were particularly impressed by their maturity, confidence and positive attitude throughout the experience. Well done to everyone involved!

🥾 This year, our Student Council wanted to support two fantastic causes through our Sponsored Walk - one local and one national. After voting, students have chosen the following charities:

• Local charity - Thornberry Animal Sanctuary: A South Yorkshire rescue centre that cares for animals, including dogs, cats and rabbits, and helps them find loving new homes.

• National charity - SANDs: The UK’s leading charity supporting families affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby, helping to improve care and provide vital support during incredibly difficult times.

Thrybergh Alumni Network - Chelsea Jarvis, Registered Vetinary Nurse

Since being a young girl, Chelsea had always dreamed of working with animals. After finishing at Thrybergh in 2014, she then attended RCAT Dinnington College to study Level 3 extended diploma in animal management for 2 years. After this, she then went on to study Veterinary Nursing at Myerscough School of Veterinary Nursing (UCLAN) for 3 years to get my Foundation Degree in veterinary nursing.

Chelsea has now been qualified for 7 years, and has experience working in different types of veterinary practice such as general first opinion, orthopaedic referral and veterinary hospitals. In 2024, she undertook a Diploma in Feline Nursing, to further her knowledge on specific care for cats. Chelsea completed this course in January 2026 and can now use the post nominals RVN ISFMDipFN after her name. She also owns a mobile pet care business in the community of Rotherham, where she provide non-clinical care to pets and help support their owners.

Chelsea's Words of Wisdom:

"At some points in life you may suffer with something called imposter syndrome, where you may doubt your abilities and your strengths - it’s very important to keep pushing through those thoughts and work towards your dream. I believe I am a real example that even though life can be tough, if you really put your mind to it, you can push through and become the best version of yourself and live a life you have always dreamed of."
