It’s Volunteers Week 2026! Throughout the week we will be sharing the stories of some of our wonderful volunteers.

Today, we meet Wendy who has been volunteering in our Pharmacy Department for over three years. She told us why she enjoys giving her time:

“It’s really rewarding. It gives you a feeling of being useful.

“I retired just before the covid pandemic. You miss that feeling of being useful and helpful. So, I thought it’s time for me to help the NHS.

“I’m based in Pharmacy, where I take medications around to different wards. As well as doing that, I’m also helping people who might be lost around the hospital.

“I wouldn’t volunteer if I didn’t enjoy it. Helping Pharmacy and helping visitors gives me that sense of being useful again.”

If you are passionate, caring and want to help like Wendy, you can find out more information about how to volunteer on our website:

This week we are celebrating the vital contribution of our volunteers as part of Volunteers’ Week (1 to 7 June 2026).

Yesterday we began the celebrations with a special tea party to thank volunteers for their dedication and commitment. Cakes and sweet treats were kindly funded by Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity as a ‘thank you’ to the Trust’s volunteers who also support the charity’s activities and fundraising.

We have received a compliment for our Dermatology team:

“I attended the Dermatology department this morning and wanted to thank staff for their help and efficient service.

“I was referred over concerns about a small lump on my back which was quickly diagnosed as a benign wart by the staff member who dealt with it very simply by freezing it.

“I just wanted to thank staff for upholding the best traditions of the NHS by dealing with my concerns in a friendly and expert manner.”

If you would like to share your feedback with us, we'd love to hear it. More information about the best way to do this can be available on our website:

Rotherham Hospice have paid tribute to Dr Fiona Hendry who this week retired from her role as Rotherham's Palliative Medicine Consulant.

Colleagues from our Trust have joined those from Rotherham Hospice in paying tribute to Fiona's two decades of dedicated service.

"Fiona has been unwavering in her commitment to supporting patients through some of the most challenging and emotional times in their lives - whether in hospital, within the hospice or in their own homes.

"As a leader of the Palliative Care Team in Rotherham, she has guided the service with warmth, integrity and quiet determination, leaving a legacy that will continue to influence care for years to come.

"We send Fiona our heartfelt thanks for everything she has given to our patients, our communities and our teams and wish her every happiness in her retirement."

Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity have visited BreathingSpace to take a sneak peek at the hard work behind the scenes to relocate the Asthma + Lung UK Breathing Space garden to it's lasting home in Rotherham.

A big thank you to the teams below that are working with the Charity to make the garden's big move possible.

The garden is sponsored by Project Giving Back and supported to relocate to our Breathing Space site by e.on, NHS Charities Together and many more.

Anyone can become unwell when the weather is hot, but some are at higher risk than others:

• Check in on older friends, family and neighbours, particularly those who live alone, who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated during the hot weather

• Don’t leave babies, children, older people or vulnerable people or pets alone in stationary cars in hot weather

• Look out for children in prams or pushchairs in hot weather; keep them in the shade, remove excess clothing, ensure there is adequate air flow and check regularly to ensure they are not overheated
