We retained this dying ash tree last autumn even though it was in the middle of the area we would subsequently replant as there was a wild bee's nest in it. On checking it today I found they had wintered well and were very active. When it finally succumbs, the tree should stand dead for a number of years and so will provide a habitat for the bees and many other creatures. When it finally falls it will damage some of the new plantation but that is a small price to pay for giving the bees a home for as long as possible.

Yellow Archangel, sometimes called Yellow Dead Nettle is a member of the mint family and the only one with yellow flowers. As the bluebells fade this plant appears in parts of the forest and woodland edges and is an indicator of ancient woodland sites. It is a favourite plant of mine as it was very common throughout the woodland nature reserve where I worked as a voluntary warden many years ago for the old Nature Conservancy Council and where I learned a great deal about woodlands and their ecology, happy memories.

This wonderful old Common Lime (Tilia europaea) tucked away in a corner of the park is showing one of the characteristics of this species, namely masses of basal suckers which in this instance are being regularly browsed by deer which is keeping them in check.
This ultimately huge tree was a classic 18th century landscape choice, especially for avenues despite its suckering habitat. Later, town planners planted it extensively as a street tree which was an odd choice due to its known habits, so for many years its roots lifted pavements as they matured, and the vigorous crowns needed regular pollarding along with the removal of suckers from the base. The tree fell out of favour, and the many lumpy street side pollards I remember as a child were removed. It was afterwards rarely grown by the nursery trade and when I planned the new Broad Walk Avenue in 1999 with this tree, I had to get the them contract grown.

This May has certainly seen some extreme varieties of weather and sometimes all in one day with sun, strong winds, thunder and hail within a few hours of each other. I awoke one day to a covering of frost in the field opposite our house to later find that many areas of young bracken stems on the rides and open areas across the forest had been frosted.
A few days later the severity of late frosts on young growth was amply demonstrated when inspecting a plantation, I found that much of new growth on the young conifers had been burnt off by the frost. They will recover but will take time to restart new growth. One of the many potential problems in the early life of a plantation and one l can have little influence over.
