We retained this dying ash tree last autumn even though it was in the middle of the area we would subsequently replant as there was a wild bee's nest in it. On checking it today I found they had wintered well and were very active. When it finally succumbs, the tree should stand dead for a number of years and so will provide a habitat for the bees and many other creatures. When it finally falls it will damage some of the new plantation but that is a small price to pay for giving the bees a home for as long as possible.
