Little Pheobes new pad!
We managed to grab a *new but used* deal off amazon to get this lovely cage for our now permanent resident.
Pheobe has been through A LOT. She came in after a cat attack, but it was very quickly obvious that she also had Metabolic Bone Disease and also a very stubborn case of Trichomoniasis.
Her MBD means that she has sissorbeak, which has improved greatly with daily physio, mainly through hand feeding. She also has deformaties in her feet, legs and hips, meaning she struggles to grip on some surfaces, and also needs regular claw trims otherwise she will cut her feet which the way she walks.
She's also been battling trich, (also known as canker), which had no respite with our usual treatment of metronidazole. Instead we had to source two seperate treatments of ronidazole to hopefully shift the disease, which we have finally started turning a corner on.
Because of Pheobes issues, she is still being hand fed (but co-operates very well!) and is still learning to eat on her own. She makes breakthroughs ever day and I'm so proud of her.
Also because of her issues, and veterinary advice, she can never be released back into the wild. I usually try to find homes for those that would do better in captivity, but as Pheobe needs quite a specialised home with a lot of monitoring, active care and help with feeding, we've decided to keep her here with us.
She regularly has free flight access to the whole room that she's in, and will get outside time in the parrots aviary when they're not in there themselves, once she's clear of her trich.
We've had a quiet start to the year so far, with only a very small handful of birds in, but I'm now sure I've jinxed myself!
