International Day of UN Peacekeepers – 29 May

HVL proudly supports the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

Many HVL veterans have served under the UN flag on peacekeeping operations across the world, helping to protect communities, support stability, and promote peace in some of the most challenging environments. Today, we recognise their professionalism, courage, and commitment, and we remember all those who have lost their lives in the service of peace.

We are also proud that one of our HVL members is currently serving on a United Nations deployment, continuing the tradition of service and dedication that so many of our veterans have demonstrated throughout their careers.

To every veteran and serving member who has worn, or continues to wear, the blue beret: thank you for your service.

HVL was neither consulted nor approached before recent political posts concerning veterans’ compensation policies were published online.

We are disappointed that veterans’ issues are increasingly being used within public political disputes without engagement with the wider veterans’ community organisations operating in Halton.

HVL is an independent, non-political organisation. We do not support or endorse political point scoring from any party.

Any improvements to policies affecting veterans are welcome, regardless of which individual or political group contributed to them. The priority should always remain the welfare and fair treatment of veterans themselves, not public ownership of the issue.

HVL is , and will never be associated with political narratives without consultation. We have a excellent reputation in the Northwest and further, (stretching as far as being invited to the House of Commons and also the House of Lords concerning veterans issues). We are also playing an important role in “Op Valour” for veterans and working with other CIOs to achieve our end goal.

Community Garden Project Update Phase 3 Complete
11.5 tonnes of soil and peat filled raised bedding areas.

HVL & PIP (Power in Partnership)

The Community Garden Project delivered in partnership between Halton’s Veterans Legion C.I.C. and PIP (Power in Partnership) has now successfully completed Phase 3 of development.

Completed Phases

Phase 1 – Removal of Old Bedding Areas

The original and deteriorated bedding areas were fully removed to prepare the site for redevelopment and improve accessibility and long-term sustainability.

Phase 2 – Delivery and Installation of New Raised Bedding Areas

New raised bedding systems were delivered and assembled, creating a safer, more accessible, and more productive growing environment for veterans and community members.

Phase 3 – Filling of Raised Bedding Areas

Phase 3 has now been completed with the successful installation of approximately 11.5 tonnes of soil and peat, filling all raised bedding areas and preparing the site for planting and cultivation activities in the next stages of the project.

Upcoming Phases

Phase 4 – Flooring Installation

The next stage will involve the installation of flooring and pathway areas to improve site access, safety, drainage, and usability throughout the garden space.

Phase 5 – Greenhouse and Shed Installation

The final phase will include the er****on of a greenhouse and storage shed, allowing year-round growing opportunities, tool storage, and expanded community gardening activities.

Project Aim

The Community Garden Project aims to create a welcoming and therapeutic outdoor environment supporting:

* Community and Veteran wellbeing
* Community engagement
* Social inclusion
* Skills development
* Outdoor therapeutic activities
* Sustainable food growing initiatives

The project continues to demonstrate the positive impact of partnership working between HVL and PIP in creating meaningful community spaces for veterans and local residents alike.

Today, the Housing Manager at The Block Armed Forces Foundation met face to face with five (5) veterans to provide housing-related support and discuss immediate accommodation options aimed at preventing street homelessness and ensuring their immediate safety and wellbeing.

Two (2) of the veterans were engaged while in HMP Liverpool, including one individual who served in the Falklands war who is due for release shortly and requires coordinated resettlement support to reduce the risk of street homelessness upon release.

The remaining three (3)veterans attended The Block’s walk-in centre seeking advice, guidance, and practical assistance with their current housing situations.

Providing in-person support continues to play a vital role in engaging veterans effectively, particularly those who may face barriers accessing online services due to mental health challenges, digital exclusion, literacy difficulties, or a lack of access to technology. Face to face engagement also helps to build trust, encourages open communication, and enables tailored support to be delivered in a more responsive and compassionate way.

The Block Armed Forces Foundation remains committed to supporting veterans in crisis by offering early intervention, advocacy, and practical pathways into safe and sustainable accommodation.

Working with the local authorities and partnership agencies.
