Wildlife Trust BCN: Northamptonshire Team

Wildlife Trust BCN: Northamptonshire Team Part of the Wildlife Trust BCN, this page focuses on the Wildlife Trust's activities in Northamptonshire, including community engagement and conservation.

Currently, our community engagement is mainly focused in the Nene Wetlands and at Summer Leys. Previously concerned solely with the Nene Wetlands Nature Reserve, this page now covers the whole of Northamptonshire to reflect the expansion of our community engagement activities to include a new visitor centre at Summer Leys Nature Reserve. The Wildlife Trust BCN is a charity that manages over 100 na

ture reserves across Beds, Cambs and Northants. We are part of a national movement of Wildlife Trusts of which Sir David Attenborough is President Emeritus. We work locally in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire and we have a big mission - we want to stop nature's decline. It is no secret that nature is in trouble. Wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate - some are calling it the next mass extinction - and the threat of climate catastrophe is a constant worry. We live in a time of emergency. But there is still hope - we can tackle both of these critical issues - but we need to scale up and act now. Together, with the movement of Wildlife Trusts, we want at least 30% of our land and sea to be connected and protected for nature’s recovery by 2030. Making more space for nature to become abundant once again will give our struggling wildlife the chance to recover and also restore beautiful wild places - places that store carbon and help to tackle the climate crisis. You will have the chance to learn about the magic of floodplain meadows, how we manage them to increase biodiversity, and how to identify key species, before recording your findings in a sketchbook with guidance from Sophie.

We have also uploaded the next few dates for our monthly workshops at Summer Leys, which run every 3rd Friday of the month. These have been very popular so book soon if you’d like to join.

🐦If you have visited the Nene Wetlands Visitor Centre recently, you'll have noticed we have made the decision to stop selling bird seed and peanuts during the summer months.

This is in line with new, science backed advice that has been released by the RSPB, to help us all feed birds safely and to keep them healthy. Suet balls and mealworms will still be available, in line with this advice.

The advice is as follows: From 1 May to 31 October, pause seeds and peanuts and offer only small amounts of mealworms, fat balls or suet. Clean feeders weekly, change water daily, and move feeders to prevent disease. And avoid bird tables.

Thank you for your understanding - we know these changes may be difficult, as we all love seeing the birds on our feeders, but it is super important we look after these very birds we love watching! Please help us do so.

It’s Wildlife Wednesday time! 🐦

Our reserves are filled with the beautiful sounds of birdsong at the moment, including many of our warbler species. This is one you can listen out for and see if you can spot- common whitethroat.

These are summer visitors from Africa & are found most often in hedgerows and scrubby areas. Identify them by their bright white throats and long tails, and listen for their rapid & ‘scratchy’ sounding song.

Male whitethroats arrive in the UK about 10 days earlier than females in order to set up territories before their potential partners arrive!
