This Drowning Prevention Week, crews form Rushden Fire Station have been speaking to people at the local swimming pool about water safety and have also been supporting the trainee lifeguards.

Remember as the weather warms up, keep yourself and others safe in and around water. Jumping into water isn’t just a quick cool‑down, it can be life-threatening in seconds. It doesn't matter how good you are at swimming; cold water shock can cause you to get into difficulties and drown.

If you spot someone in difficulty, remember CALL - FLOAT - THROW

✅ CALL
- Dial 999 and ask for Fire & Rescue Service
- Shout to get attention from others nearby
- Keep eyes on the person in the water at all times

✅ FLOAT
- Encourage the person to float
- Ask them to stay calm and control their breathing

✅ THROW
- Throw something to help – don’t go in
- Use anything that floats (Lifebuoy, throw line, bag, bottle or football)

With the warmer summer weather, water may look inviting, but the temperature of the water can be low enough to cause 'Cold Water Shock'.
Parents - make sure your children are aware of the dangers about jumping in, things can quickly go wrong, even for strong swimmers:

- Cold water shock
- Hidden hazards under the surface
- Strong currents and unseen forces
- Shallow or changing depths
- Impact injuries from height (tombstoning)

Make sure they know what to do if someone gets into trouble in the water:
❌ Don’t jump in
✅ Call 999
✅ Use something to help from the side (ball, stick, life ring)

Remember: Float to Live if you fall in unexpectedly.

Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service is currently recruiting for the next intake of Fire Cadets. If you know of a young person aged between 13 and 17 who would love to learn new skills, get hands on experience of life in the fire service and make a difference in their local community then please point them in our direction! Our crew will be at Rushden's Splash Leisure Pool for the coming week between 4 and 5.30pm every day* this week to support Drowning Prevention Week.

Come and visit the crew or if you are in the area and learn about how you can keep yourself safe in and around water.

*Please note that they may be called away to incidents during this time so we can't guarantee timings.

We were delighted to welcome four-year-old Oliver to the station recently - and make him a member of the crew for the day.

Oliver has been battling cancer, and after we heard his story we invited him along to give him a special day to remember.

We gave Oliver his own bespoke fire uniform and a special kit peg for him to hang it on.

We then let Oliver tackle a fire with a hose, and he helped to rescue a casualty from a mock incident, before sitting down and having lunch with the crew.

Oliver’s dad Paul Smith said: “We want to thank the Rushden crew for an amazing time and for their support in keeping our little warrior happy.

“We asked him out of ten how his experience was - he said 100/10. Thank you again to Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and Rushden Fire Station for his experience and making us all so welcome.”

The Rushden station is once again hosting the NHS Blood Donation team today until 5pm.

While we have donors here, it gives us an excellent opportunity to speak to them about fire safety and offer Home Fire Safety Checks.

We'll be at Rushden Lakes both today and tomorrow (April 9) from 11am-3pm. Come and say hello!

If you were planning on enjoying the nice weather today, why not pop along to Rushden Lakes and say hello to our firefighters.

Our crew from Rushden Fire Station will be joined by our Prevention Team and community outreach volunteers in the car park from 11am to 3pm.

They will be there to show you all around the fire engine, giving out fire and water safety advice and offering free Home Fire Safety Visits for people in the local area.

And the good news is, if you cannot make it today, they will be there tomorrow (April 9) from 11am-3pm again!
